I worked at Solar Turbines full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The product is very cool, great benefits, decent pay, annual shut-down between Christmas and New Years, (mostly) smart people, gym / cafeteria,

    Cons

Slow to promote, engineers get the best opportunities around the entire organization, not fast-moving on innovation, culture of people who spend 30+ years working for the company.

    Advice to Management

To retain fresh talent, it'd be better if you promoted people faster. There's too much focus on where people will be at the company in 15 years. If you want to innovate, put people with fresh perspectives in positions of power.

I have been working at Solar Turbines as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I've been contracting since 2011 and I have found that Solar Turbines is one of the premier places to work. I have had the opportunity to work with some of the most talented people in the area of Windchill and Creo Parametric. If your looking to work on the leading edge of technology then this is the place you want to be.

    Cons

No Snow year round... 70 degree days in the winter... My worst con for this company..

    Advice to Management

Be a little more open to the older generation of technologist. Currently they appear to want people fresh from school to mold... The older technologist have education and experience that is already bought and paid for.

Solid San Diego based company. Good career opportunities (with an education). Good to their employees, good pay, great benefits and safety conscious.

    Cons

Corporate style company, lots of layers. Sometimes hard to get ahead or get the raise you deserve. Some senior employees are no longer productive.

    Pros

The tasks they assign you and performance required are very clear. There is tons of support from managers. It is a very good team environment from all coworkers.

    Cons

There is not a ton of upward mobility. The company is highly structured and there is less room for free thinkers.

    Advice to Management

Spend time with your A+ employees and teach them how they can advance.

I worked at Solar Turbines as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Great work environment. Learn about manufacturing and design. Was very hands on which is great for an intern because I learned a lot more than I could if I was just sitting behind a desk. People who I worked with were great and easy to get along with. Pay was excellent as well.

    Cons

No real cons. Just do your work and you'll be good to go. If you are not a morning person then it might be a little difficult as the work day starts at 6AM.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work. Really enjoyed the management and never had any problems with them at all.
