I worked at Solar Turbines full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The product is very cool, great benefits, decent pay, annual shut-down between Christmas and New Years, (mostly) smart people, gym / cafeteria,

    Cons

Slow to promote, engineers get the best opportunities around the entire organization, not fast-moving on innovation, culture of people who spend 30+ years working for the company.

    Advice to Management

To retain fresh talent, it'd be better if you promoted people faster. There's too much focus on where people will be at the company in 15 years. If you want to innovate, put people with fresh perspectives in positions of power.

I worked at Solar Turbines full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Solid San Diego based company. Good career opportunities (with an education). Good to their employees, good pay, great benefits and safety conscious.

    Cons

Corporate style company, lots of layers. Sometimes hard to get ahead or get the raise you deserve. Some senior employees are no longer productive.

    I worked at Solar Turbines

    Pros

Great benefits and decent salary. Excellent location. Onsite cafeteria and gym.

    Cons

Bad parking, little to zero chance of career advancement for some positions. Long time employees are being forced into retirement or laid off to make way for lower paid and less experienced workers.

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to adopt the Caterpillar business model. People are not numbers on a spreadsheet.

I worked at Solar Turbines for more than 5 years

    Pros

They really take care of you. Great benefits, great hours, a lot of flexibility to accommodate employees with young families.

    Cons

Does not foster creativity. Things have been done one way for many years, so if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Makes sense for the industry, as technology in heavy machinery takes years to be proven safe and effective. But this would not be a good place for some one who craves the "startup" feel".

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Solar Turbines full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Friendly people who are helpful and generally want to do the right thing. Great benefits and stability. Easy to move around and try different positions.

    Cons

The company has outgrown the small company feel over the past 5 years and now is bogged down in red tape and its difficult to get anything done.

    Advice to Management

The leadership, director level and above need to recognize that moral is on the decline and this is primarily due to lack of a direction from upper management. There are a lot of programs and people sitting around and wasting time. Discard what is not working and invest in the future.

I have been working at Solar Turbines full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great benefits, people are very friendly, overall great place to work.

    Cons

Highs and lows depending on the economy. Especially crucial when it comes to price of Oil and Gas. Layoffs when the price of oil is low.

    Advice to Management

The person who works for you is not just a number. Their job should not be in jeopardy if the price of oil drops below a certain threshold.
