I have been working at SolarWinds (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great people with an exciting always changing environment that pushes you to be uncomfortable which in turn drives you to be better in all aspects of your area of expertise. They are also very forgiving to those that give it their all. If you want to punch a clock and collect a check this is not the place for you.

    Cons

Very fast paced and constant change.

I worked at SolarWinds as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    • Free snacks and drinks
    • Free catering twice a week
    • Nice campus
    • The work was a bit challenging
    • When I had to take off, I didn’t have to be too concerned
    • Good manager, co-workers
    • I think I gained valuable experience working in a SCRUM-type environment
    • The work wasn’t too stressful, and felt meaningful

    Cons

    • There were a lot of times I felt as if I had little to do
    • Sometimes (but not too often) tasks weren’t completely clearly defined
    • There wasn’t much time via activities to get to know the team
    • I came to a UI Intern position with a bit of experience, so besides learning angular a bit more, I feel like I didn’t learn much other technical skills

    Advice to Management

Be a bit more on top of creating a backlog of tasks so the interns can stay busy a bit longer.

I worked at SolarWinds full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great team camaraderie, supportive managers, and perks like twice weekly lunches help make this a fun place to work. True open-door policy with managers in colleagues across all departments. I would still work there today if our office had not been closed. The customers I worked with were generally a pleasure to talk to and it was satisfying to see a successful deployment go live.

    Cons

The sales strategies of SolarWinds border on predatory, particularly for the ISRs on staff, a strategy that was reinforced by the managers. Constant contact and callbacks were the norm, so as a Sales Engineer it wasn't uncommon to reach out to offer technical assistance and receive less than courteous replies from burnt out sales leads or opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Long-term growth will require additional investment in products and a change in sales strategy - in my time and experience sales leads would be loaded for bear by the time Sales Engineering got to them. The turnover I saw in the ISR org is harmful - burning out ISRs after a year or two only harms the organization long-term.

    Pros

Great benefits, culture and very smart people. Demand is stressful but with a sense of purpose.

    Cons

Some time misalignment between top execs. With the recent refocus on products and the customer, that will change.

    Advice to Management

Focus on top talent , develop the leaders of tomorrow.

I worked at SolarWinds full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I worked in the Austin office and Management has been actively making it a more fun place to work. People that thrive there can handle the fast pace. It is great to work with IT clients because they are professional and courteous. Management presses on you hard, but I enjoyed the challenge and stayed friendly to them and my tenure there was fun.

    Cons

You have to average 7 calls an hour in order to keep up with new leads and existing open opportunities. I would stay late sometimes trying to make decisions on which accounts were dead and needed to be closed so I would know how to manage my next day better. Most quarters I noticed only 18% of the salesforce hit quota, but I made 60K without hitting quota and is my reason for 4 stars along with the fact that I loved my teammates and had a blast at all the work events.

Creative coworkers who honestly enjoy the job they get to do every day.

I worked at SolarWinds as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

The office is beautiful and there are lost of perks on the campus that is shared with AMD.
The media team was super informative and welcoming, even though I was a contractor they provided a great opportunity to learn new skills that I could use after my assignment

    Cons

Pay was a little on the low side and although my assignment was only 6 weeks, there were other contractors there that had been hired with the intention of being made perm after a trial period but were extended for a full year before they were allowed to be brought on as FTE's.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the positive atmosphere and provide as many opportunities for employees to learn new skills even if they are not intended to be converted.

I have been working at SolarWinds full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Wheels are always turning at this place, it's a truly refreshing atmosphere to be apart of. Everyone that I've interacted with is passionate about the work that they are doing.

All of the management I have interacted with seems to genuinely care about what's going on around them. The approach generally seems to be that they hired you for a reason, and they trust you to do what's best.

    Some perks of the job:

•Office - Modern design, ample parking, onsite gym/cafeteria, plethora of free snacks

•Free Lunch on Tuesdays and Fridays

    •Outstanding employee benefits

    •Training

    Cons

With SolarWinds being a larger company, processes are in place everywhere. I've found that it is sometimes difficult to find out how to do something here. I feel like the employee on-boarding could be refined to eliminate this confusion.

    Advice to Management

Please create more products organically. Every piece of software that the company has created is fantastic and offers a great value. It troubles me to see as many acquisitions as I do.

On the point of acquisitions, please make sure you are growing the products you purchase. I've seen so many softwares we have purchased slow to a screeching halt with development. I don't think SolarWinds should be satisfied with maintaining, it should be driving innovation. We should be industry leaders in every space that we are in.

    Advice to Management
