What are your colleagues talking about?
- Current Employee, less than 1 year★★★★★
Pros
Amazing people, great benefits and support from team
Cons
Long commute to work in the mornings and afternoons. Transportation is improving over the next few years.
- Former Employee★★★★★
Pros
You get to ski, get a free season pass. Don’t expect to do avalanche work.
Cons
They run people out of the patrol by not letting them do anything. Biggest turnover out of any mountain I’ve ever seen. Upper Management protects a hill captain responsible for multiple people quitting, just because of hazing. They’re friends outside of work. So unless you go to HR which would alienate you more, you’re most likely going to get hazed. In the 3 years working there they had close to a 100% turnover rate

Pros
Great hours, all of the managers are amazing and very helpful. Everyone pushes you to be better and be the best you can.
Cons
The commute can be long on bad weather days.

Ski during the day work lodging at night
May 11, 2022 - Concierge in Solitude, Optional[UT]RecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Sitting at a desk next to a fire place after skiing was really nice. Many of the owners and guests were great to make connections with. Lots of slow time during shoulder season which allowed for you to work on school, reading, or browsing the internet. Great co-workers.
Cons
Management was nice but were new and really wanted to re-shape the lodging departments expectations, policies, and work load without changing pay. Many owners and guests were very confused on key card policies because of the handful of different management companies throughout the resort. Parents would try to drop their kids off like it was a day care. Higher pay and better transportation to deal with the insane canyon congestion.

A fun experience with questionable upper management.
Feb 14, 2022 - Rental Sales Agent in Brighton, UTRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The ski perks are great and you will most likely work with fun people.
Cons
The upper management this year (2022) is not personable. They seem to not care about you and only ever ask for your manager.

Working Towards Improvement/Employee Benefits
Jan 12, 2021 - Anonymous Employee in Solitude, Optional[UT]RecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
SMR is working towards greater employee appreciation. In the past couple of years they've increased base salaries, offered employees Alterra passes, some comp passes to give to others, half price passes, occasional bonuses (last season was the first year they were going to implement an end of season bonus - I hope they keep it), bus pass, new employee shuttle, etc. The workplace culture is improving.
Cons
It often feels like you have to do your job with one hand tied behind your back. You're not given the tools you need to succeed or do the best you can - budget is often cited as the reason. This makes staffing hard because those that want to do a good job often go elsewhere where they have better resources. Also - just getting there is difficult with canyon traffic (working an 8-9 hour day is actually like working a 12 hour day with commute).

Small Ski Resort Goes TOO Corporate
Feb 27, 2021 - Ski InstructorRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Small resort compared to the larger US companies like Vail.
Cons
Over the last 5 years the company as a whole has shifted to more of a corporate dynamic making the feel of a locals ski area disappear. The politics of the company changed too much for my taste.
- Current Employee★★★★★
Pros
Easy job , Great People to work with
Cons
pay and benefits unless you like a free ski pass
