I have been working at Sonoco Products full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    1) We are treated very good. Even after a few layoffs at our plant, Sonoco tried hard to get displaced employees into other Sonoco locations.
    2) our management team is very open minded and works with its employees.

    Cons

    1) Insurance isn't the greatest, but who's is.
    2) I don't get to see my family during the week since we do not rotate shifts and I am on 2nd shift.

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing

I have been working at Sonoco Products full-time

    Pros

Work environment, flexibility, culture, opportunity for growth in areas outside of discipline, great managers

    Cons

A little slow in mid-management growth within a individual discipline
    Benefits - mainly insurance
    Lean departments in certain disciplines

    Advice to Management

Improve succession planning, more opportunities for continuing education and training

    Pros

    Great Pay, Benefits, and Networking

    Cons

The upside for young professionals is very limited. Hours can be long, Holidays can be rough. The longterm outlook of some divisions appears grim.

    Two Tier pay scale sucks

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the two tier system and better people will be hired on and stay

I have been working at Sonoco Products full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Sonoco has a very family-oriented culture, driven from its small-town roots in Hartsville, SC
Pay is very competitive for the industry
Product line and day-to-day work is dependent on job function and division within Sonoco
Some divisions are very innovative and jobs customer facing, some divisions are old manufacturing environments and drab day-to-day work

    Cons

    Very conservative company and views

    Advice to Management

Increase retention of young talent, they are the future of your company
The culture of the company is incredible, however, continue to improve and change with the times
Learn to market your products and our offerings
Find a way to keep employees more up-to-date on industry trends and insights
Maintain manufacturing excellence but do not forget to invest in growth

I have been working at Sonoco Products full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Flex time is great in the departments and jobs that can accommodate it.
Salary is good considering the cost of living for the area. Health benefits are ok.

    Cons

Training is available to some, but don't expect Sonoco to help you achieve it. You will need to be pushy about it. Currently the company is on cost controls so they can have cash for acquisitions and dividends so training and ergonomic changes/accommodations are not available. Vacation time given to employees is not as generous as current market conditions. Bonus does exist but not for band 6 and below. These same or similar positions at other companies would result in participation in a bonus program.
401K program is ok, matching program was reduced several years ago and still has not been reinstated to that level.
HR is a mystery. Never sure of who to contact with issues about compensation, health benefits, etc. Not consistent across the company on how sick time is used.
It is still a man's company. Women are starting to make some gains, but the southern man's mentality is still hard at work here.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your people. it actually will cost you more to hire a person and bring them up to speed than it would to train and invest in them.
