I have been working at Sonoco Products full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Flex time is great in the departments and jobs that can accommodate it.
Salary is good considering the cost of living for the area. Health benefits are ok.

    Cons

Training is available to some, but don't expect Sonoco to help you achieve it. You will need to be pushy about it. Currently the company is on cost controls so they can have cash for acquisitions and dividends so training and ergonomic changes/accommodations are not available. Vacation time given to employees is not as generous as current market conditions. Bonus does exist but not for band 6 and below. These same or similar positions at other companies would result in participation in a bonus program.
401K program is ok, matching program was reduced several years ago and still has not been reinstated to that level.
HR is a mystery. Never sure of who to contact with issues about compensation, health benefits, etc. Not consistent across the company on how sick time is used.
It is still a man's company. Women are starting to make some gains, but the southern man's mentality is still hard at work here.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your people. it actually will cost you more to hire a person and bring them up to speed than it would to train and invest in them.

I worked at Sonoco Products full-time

    Pros

Very conservative and cash / dividend focused company. Probably a very good company to have in your investment portfolio if you are looking for consistent dividend returns.

    Cons

A very insulated and inwardly focused company. Some of the company's leaders also have a tendency to be quite arrogant and have a belief that the company does everything right and does not need to change a thing. The company has not grown organically---only via acquisitions that are disparate in their own right.

    Advice to Management

Wake-up to the needs to change, be competitive and grow organically. Get better in touch with your employees, suppliers and customers.

I worked at Sonoco Products full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Leadership is fairly well aligned and focused. They constantly evaluate the organization and make the difficult decisions to make cuts when needed. They are very aligned with the shareholder and maximizing their value, I think because the executive leadership are large shareholders or have a great deal of stock options. I found the salaries to be very competitive. In general I think it is a well run company in a very competitive space. Sonoco is always evaluating acquisitions that diversify their product offerings and has made some outstanding acquisitions in the last few years.

    Cons

Many of the products they make are in declining markets. The world is moving towards reducing packaging and Sonoco is a packaging company. The salaries are very competitive but the benefits get worse and worse each year. Since the top line isn't growing to support the earnings promises made to the shareholder they have to cut costs from the bottom line which usually means a reduction in force. Workers live under the conditions that their positions may be cut at any time and operate under continued cost constraints, travel bans, and hiring freezes. Many times it felt like short term cost control measures outweighed the longer term strategic need. What once was a company that had a small town feel is evolving to uncaring ruthless. It is difficult to completely blame the management as their large consumer segment customers are forcing them to make significant concessions in price and extending payment terms. While I think Sonoco is a well run company well for their shareholders the constant cost control measures and living under the fear of losing their job wears on the employees. It is a good place to come for the short term but I did not see many retire from Sonoco, most got packaged out. If you don't mind a 2-5 year stay you will gain a lot of valuable experience.

    Advice to Management

Continue to make acquisitions into emerging markets. Focus on a longer term more strategic view of your human resources/capital.
