I worked at Sonoco Products full-time

    Pros

-Small company feel despite $5MM revenue.

    Cons

-Hartsville. The town in which it is located is really small and there's nothing to do.
-Work is terribly boring. Management does not focus on retaining young talent.

I have been working at Sonoco Products full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you can get training it is very worth it. Sonoco benefits are good.

    Cons

Advancement is very slow. Training is not always available especially when money is tight but that seems to be year round. Wrong people in positions, too much incompetency and not fair attitude. Poor communication internally. Hard to hold people accountable, because management is afraid to "hurt peoples feelings" Lots of good ole boy attitude.

    Advice to Management

Keeping your ears open to what everyone is saying can lead you in the right direction. Having certain people you only listen to can bite you in the end.

I worked at Sonoco Products full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pay is good, benefits are great.
Kudos to a few of the floor supervisors who are supportive and try to improve the culture.
    Job security

    Cons

When will people learn that if you groom and empower employees by providing a positive and supportive work environment, you will produce employees who will go the extra mile and do whatever it takes to make the company successful.
Leading by intimidation - this usually comes from uneducated or insecure staff.
Bullying is counterproductive and unethical (production management).
"HR" - an uneducated HR employee is a high liability to any company! Unethical hiring decisions are the rule, not the exception.

    Advice to Management

Shame on you, any ethical company could not turn a blind eye to all of the legitimate complaints at Beauty Park.

Hot _ should be temp controlled to cause less problems for machines management does not care about employees nor listen to suggestions cant keep employees because of rude management

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to hard workers not get rid of them. Give pay raises when said with no excuses or not year later or never. Show appreciation to perfect attendance and hold a family day at the zoo or something. Show you appreciate them

I have been working at Sonoco Products full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good Pay, and Close to home. Also very safe company.

    Cons

Not enough people to do what needs to be done. Parts for repairs often not in stock. Parts they do have are often used or refurbished & worse than part replaced out of the box. Money spent on gadgets but not anything to actually run better. No 2 shifts are run the same. Nothing is uniform. What is a good product on one shift may not be on another. Some people get no discipline for same thing that others are suspended or even fired for doing.

    Advice to Management

Less chiefs, more Indians, quality parts, get back to the basics of making sure all do their job correctly and the same way. Do the right thing as we see our CEO say in his video instead of punishing some & not others. Hold those accountable that fail to do their routine duties instead of expecting others to deal with the aftermath & extra work they cause.

    Pros

Good benefits and training. Mature markets provide a stable revenue stream that can be allocated to new business endeavors. Competitive compensation.

    Cons

Sonoco's leadership team has been completely overhauled. Corporate strategies have changed in order to become a more up to date and innovation based company in their less mature markets. With that, they are experiencing some growing pains- some of the newly appointed leadership teams are less qualified than their predecessors.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the people that are embedded in each business sector- they are a critical factor in maintaining the relationship between Sonoco and its customers. Communicate with your employees before making decisions that will affect them directly.

I have been working at Sonoco Products full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The company has plenty of opportunity for growth. They have the various technologies to grow if they do not let their legacy business units try to tell the customers what they want.

    Cons

The company says People, Culture, Values but in the last 18 months it is all about the $. The culture is to take more money from employees (benefit reductions and layoff), The people are an asset to be shed to save money without any look at your own key measurements, and well values just not there anymore.

    Advice to Management

How many more "restructure" changes can you put your employees through that make little to no sense before they start to look around? The reasoning we are being asked to believe do not match the goals nor the results.

    Pros

Pay, and networking potential. If you're employed in Hartsville you have the "run of the town."

    Cons

Old boy culture is first and foremost. Management doesn't care for employees who aren't in sales or engineering. You're either someones relative, incredibly qualified, or in sales/engineering. Anything else and you're disregarded and overworked.

Opportunities are only open to the select few mentioned above.

    Advice to Management

Embrace a modern workplace culture for all administrative departments.

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Sonoco Products full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Decent benefits and pay. That's about it. Even that is becoming more and more scarce.

    Cons

No communication between hourly employees and management, in fact no communication in management either. Senior department managers cannot be trusted, they will lie to keep employees "on a leash." Good work is not valued, those who break rules, are rude to supervision and abuse "privileges" are rewarded. Brown nosers are rewarded as well until they are no longer useful. The company is not family oriented as they claim, they could care less about employees families. Cutthroat in how they treat supposed under-educated hourly workers. Anything you say to a manager will be used against you later. Plant manager says he does not want an us and them attitude between hourly employees and management, but his actions indicate otherwise. No chance for advancement unless you are in the clique, or have someone from corporate who looks out for you. This company expects employees to make sacrifices to work there but refuse to show appreciation for it. This was a much better company when the Cokers had control, at least most of them knew our names.

    Advice to Management

Sonoco used to be a company that cared about its employees. Go back to that atmosphere.

I worked at Sonoco Products as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

A lot of opportunities to experiment around, if anyone bothered to train you properly.
Some nice people to talk to.

    Cons

No guidance whatsoever, boss just expected other coworkers to train me, who didn't have time.
Some coworkers can be very abrasive in social interactions.
Boss out of the office the majority of the time.

    Advice to Management

    Train your interns better.
