I worked at Sonoco Products full-time

    Pros

The people are caring and nice
The company has a diversified portfolio of products and stable financial record
they will try and pay for your development

    Cons

Hartsville is small, not easy to travel to places from there and not much to do either, so it is not for everyone. The town and the area is a little run down not a lot of opportunities for people.
Lack marketing resources Sonoco is a B2B company, so marketing is not a major component to the overall strategy of the company. Sonoco is engineering and sales company for the most part, so operations and engineering really dictate the overall plans for the company, which tend to be reactive business customer needs

    Advice to Management

Be forward thinking and proactive. Don't be afraid to experiment, challenge your customer don't be just order takers and react to their wishes. Grow and innovate organically and stop relying on acquiring other companies to grow and innovate through. Finally, it is a little cliche, but environmentally friendly packaging, food waste, water waste are all things to really go after it the same way you invest in safety and not just talk about.

    Pros

Strong supplier of packaging products, usually first or second in markets they serve, provide good training and incentive compensation to their commercial groups.

    Cons

Their consumer division is where company is investing for growth. Industrial businesses have poor advancement and growth opportunities, very little in new product development. Not enough cross divisional opportunities for growth and advancement.

    Pros

Very conservative and cash / dividend focused company. Probably a very good company to have in your investment portfolio if you are looking for consistent dividend returns.

    Cons

A very insulated and inwardly focused company. Some of the company's leaders also have a tendency to be quite arrogant and have a belief that the company does everything right and does not need to change a thing. The company has not grown organically---only via acquisitions that are disparate in their own right.

    Advice to Management

Wake-up to the needs to change, be competitive and grow organically. Get better in touch with your employees, suppliers and customers.

    Cons

Its a really hot job and boring job. Also long hours because do 12 hour shifts everytime you work and its really hot and boring.

    Advice to Management

Don't have any advice for management because they all do their job very well
