I worked at Sony Electronics full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Interesting products and global company. I also got to work with very good engineers.

    Cons

Lack of job security. The number of US employees in SEL went from 25,000 to under 1000 when I was there.

    Advice to Management

At this point, I think Sony just has to rebuild. They should stick to their core competencies.

I worked at Sony Electronics full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Nice offices with fitness center, on-site cafeteria, Star Bucks and covered parking garage. Some attempt to make it a fun place to work with "take your kid to work day", free movie screenings, some product discounts, etc.

    Cons

Very limited local decision making which makes the company slow to respond to competition or changing consumer demands. Seems like the engineers/product designers in Tokyo determine what cool gadgets to make without much input from world market consumers. Senior management has very little financial decision making authority so everything gets analyzed to death up the food chain to Tokyo.

    Advice to Management

Retire Mike Fasulo and bring in a change maker.

I worked at Sony Electronics (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The company offers decent competitive pay, raise are minimum 2-4% and is based on review (can be bais), bonus is based on how the company's results are. Hours are decent, people are good, building is new, caf is pretty good.

    Cons

Not sure what tomorrow will bring. Lots of changes annually. If your looking for a discount max discount at any point is 25% which is nothing, you can probably get it cheaper outside. Wouldn't' go back if asked too.

    Advice to Management

Need to treat employees better, have a career path that will entice people to stay and/or join. Discounts need to actually mean something and is a real benefit to your employees

    Pros

The Sony brand and products were so cutting edge, it used to be the premier consumer electronics company in the world.

    Cons

Too much involvement from Japan HQ with no clear direction. so many layoffs and the pay was not competitive. There were a few really poor Senior mgmt hires that made the culture bad.

    Advice to Management

Stick to the core of what the company does best, great design, quality of products and try to be more marketing focused like you used to !

I worked at Sony Electronics full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Co-workers are very down to earth and willing to help in anyway possible. The corporate office personnel are well informed and knowledgeable.

    Cons

There has to be a better balance between management, employees, and contractors. Work and life balance can sometimes be so blurred that it's difficult to determine whether you are working for pleasure or the bottom line.

    Advice to Management

Take employees feelings, goals, and expectations into consideration at all times. Products that they sell do not replace the idea that people are important too.

I worked at Sony Electronics full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    1) Some fantastic people who care and want to do a great job.
    2) Competitive salaries (more than competitive at the director on up levels), good benefits
    3) Most roles have a good work-life balance

    Cons

    1) The culture is not very good. Lots of layoffs, constant fear of losing your job. People protect their jobs, and don't worry about the company or the organization outside of their direct team
    2) Things are often dictated at the micro level on high from company HQ
    3) Most roles are just about executing plans from above. Innovation is often talked about, but innovative ideas are quickly squashed.

    Advice to Management

The culture of Sony has lost its way. There can often be a clash in cultures between East and West. The focus is not on innovation and delighting the customer. Too much ego, too much time wasted.

    Pros

Some great people, with potential for providing strong contribution. History of strong technology; still some important patents. Decent pay and good benefits. Potential for important synergies between Sony pictures, Sony music, Playstation, Consumer electronics and professional electronics -- no competitors have that.

    Cons

Weak management with frequent turnover. No accountability. Constant re-shuffling of leadership in Japan means nobody has the incentive to take business risks and "own" important new initiatives. US management has been reduced to beancounters and apologists. True product management, strategic planning and R&D have all been decimated.

    Advice to Management

Take a page out of your competitor's playbook -- like Apple, Samsung, Nest, Sonos; hire innovative engineers and product planners in Silicon Valley to leverage latest trends. Commit to a new business initiative (like medical, networked home or digital cinema) and hire expert leaders to build the best team.

I worked at Sony Electronics part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Working at the previous Sony Style store was a good job for college students because of the flexible retail hours. Great coworkers and some great managers.

    Cons

Pay is stupid low. Like many electronic stores, commission is where you make your money. But if you aren't that great of a salesperson but more of operations.. as in getting the store ready with visual tasks, keeping price tags up to date, etc.. you are still below the totem pole. If you are a salesperson who sells like a snake and make your numbers even though your process is unethical (giving random discounts for no reason, promises of extra items, free trade in even past the return policy), you'll receive a larger pay raise than someone who actually runs the stores operations.

Makes no sense because without the up to date operation tasks.. you wouldn't be able to sell anything correctly!

Also.. no room for advancement outside the Sony retail division unless you brown nose your way to corporate management.

    Advice to Management

Back up your employees especially when dealing with an incompetent uneducated sneaky customer. It's not all about the sales sometimes, but its about the quality. The customer is not always right.
