Great company but on the way down

      Pros

Great people, culture, opportunity. At one time had the best product in the world

      Cons

Bad decisions on business direction from the top since 2000. No new innovations like they had in the 80's, 90's. Brand name took a big hit.

      Pros

Great brand, great people, great office gym

      Cons

limited flexibility to work from home when needed, lack of growth opportunities due to combination of weak market for Sony products and dominance of international assignees in management structure.

      Pros

Great product, Great people for the most part(the only reason I haven't quit yet!). Discounts are pretty good.

      Cons

The retail upper management is poorly run! You can still get written up, even after you have a managers approval to do something!!!!!!! HR is useless! If you go to them with a problem, nothing gets done!( I don't trust anyone in HR either!) It is extremely hard for internal employees to advance into other departments! Unless you know someone in that department, they will never look at your resume' or give you the opportunity for an interview, no matter what your qualifications!

      Pros

Great people. Learn so much about marketing, sales, business develop, event planning and operations. Every day has different challenges which makes it interesting.

      Cons

No long term strategic management. Starts every fiscal year with good intentions, but then transitions back to controller micro management of marketing initiatives and plans. Very very difficult to use plan strategy and build markets without many people involved in questioning why. Controllers and management want direct sales results from marketing activities. Time is spent mostly justifying direction, and proving you should do something, instead of doing something. End result is late to market, less sales and very very limited ability to explore non traditional marketing and social media opportunities. Very very very structured, Mandated policies procedures and responsibility hand cuff creativity and response to market.

My experience within my department was great but it seemed like the company was slow to adapt to the marketplace.

      Pros

The product portfolio is the best in the industry so it is fun working towards promoting all the great toys Sony makes. There are (were) a lot of great people across the company so while some can be frustrating to deal with, others keep you engaged.

      Cons

Some of the strategic decisions made defy logic. The company was forced to go through another massive layoff because of tough business conditions but i feel that the lack of sales had to do more with poor management than anything else. As an example, we were very good at running out of product at the wrong time leaving store shelves empty.

Unfulfilled Promise - lack of vision

Jul 25, 2015 - Vice President in San Jose, CA
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Some great people, with potential for providing strong contribution. History of strong technology; still some important patents. Decent pay and good benefits. Potential for important synergies between Sony pictures, Sony music, Playstation, Consumer electronics and professional electronics -- no competitors have that.

      Cons

Weak management with frequent turnover. No accountability. Constant re-shuffling of leadership in Japan means nobody has the incentive to take business risks and "own" important new initiatives. US management has been reduced to beancounters and apologists. True product management, strategic planning and R&D have all been decimated.

Sony is a good place to work.

      Pros

Cool products, nice new HQ building, great people to work with (mostly), employee discounts on Sony products, good communication from top level management, international work environment, pretty good salaries, pretty good benefits. Overall a good place to work.

      Cons

A little slow to react to market trends so they have become a follower in some areas, though they are trying to change that. A few groups work a lot of overtime. Some groups have limited promotions, so need to look to move to other groups if you want to move up the ladder (but that may not be a bad thing).

      Hard to get promoted

      Pros

I had a great run with them, working in 4 different departments, but each move was lateral. I got to know a lot of great people who referred me to other positions and had the opportunity to work for some awesome managers.

      Cons

They are short staffed nowadays with all the layoffs and reorganizing... so my positions frequently involved overtime and last minute requests. Moving up in the company requires really knowing the right person, and it seems like everyone is looking for a better job - lots of competition. Low employee moral and seems like going over and beyond is hard to come by. It's hard to get any new ideas approved.

It's not for everyone, but if you can maneuver through the politics, you can do really well.

Nov 20, 2012 - Manager in San Diego, CA

      Pros

Discounts on lots of different products throughout the year. Great people to work with, too. Sony does try to do a lot for its people.

      Cons

A lot of old upper management with 20+ years call the shots so the thinking is very stagnant and it's all about keeping the same good ol' boys employed although they have no new ideas or bring much value to the table.
