I worked at Sony Electronics full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great people, culture, opportunity. At one time had the best product in the world

    Cons

Bad decisions on business direction from the top since 2000. No new innovations like they had in the 80's, 90's. Brand name took a big hit.

    Advice to Management

Rethink the direction and get back to innovation

I worked at Sony Electronics for more than 8 years

    Pros

Great brand, great people, great office gym

    Cons

limited flexibility to work from home when needed, lack of growth opportunities due to combination of weak market for Sony products and dominance of international assignees in management structure.

    Advice to Management

Support employees with growth opportunities. Give employees more flexibility to work remote.

I worked at Sony Electronics full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great people, very good health benefits, 401K, matching etc. Excellent product when it finally gets to market

    Cons

Japanese management blind to reality and market changes. Many layoffs due to bad management and product decisions. Only care about bottom line and not the people who contribute value. Continual layoffs as company fortunes and profit dwindle.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the Voice of the customer and really make changes to products in a timely fashion

    Pros

    Great people and good comradery.

    Cons

Declining sales = continual RIF's so moral is low. Put some responsibility back on the U.S. side.

    Advice to Management

Find a visionary leader e.g. Akio Morita, Steve Jobs (not an easy task).

I worked at Sony Electronics full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great people. Learn so much about marketing, sales, business develop, event planning and operations. Every day has different challenges which makes it interesting.

    Cons

No long term strategic management. Starts every fiscal year with good intentions, but then transitions back to controller micro management of marketing initiatives and plans. Very very difficult to use plan strategy and build markets without many people involved in questioning why. Controllers and management want direct sales results from marketing activities. Time is spent mostly justifying direction, and... proving you should do something, instead of doing something. End result is late to market, less sales and very very limited ability to explore non traditional marketing and social media opportunities. Very very very structured, Mandated policies procedures and responsibility hand cuff creativity and response to market.

    Advice to Management

Look at the talent and experience you have and encourage employees to apply it Give people chance for success, don't defeat it before it happens.

I worked at Sony Electronics full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great benefits, great people, great facility with perks, employee events, etc.

    Cons

Lots of tenured employees. Low morale employees that stick around and are just there to "collect a paycheck".

    Advice to Management

Invest in your entry level/mid level employees for growth and development. Be open to taking risks and change the mindset of "this is how we have always done it."

    I worked at Sony Electronics

    Pros

Some great people, with potential for providing strong contribution. History of strong technology; still some important patents. Decent pay and good benefits. Potential for important synergies between Sony pictures, Sony music, Playstation, Consumer electronics and professional electronics -- no competitors have that.

    Cons

Weak management with frequent turnover. No accountability. Constant re-shuffling of leadership in Japan means nobody has the incentive to take business risks and "own" important new initiatives. US management has been reduced to beancounters and apologists. True product management, strategic planning and R&D have all been decimated.

    Advice to Management

Take a page out of your competitor's playbook -- like Apple, Samsung, Nest, Sonos; hire innovative engineers and product planners in Silicon Valley to leverage latest trends. Commit to a new business initiative (like medical, networked home or digital cinema) and hire expert leaders to build the best team.
