Nice studio lot to walk around. Close to lunch places.

    Pros

Compared to other studios I have worked for, Sony offers a reasonable work-life balance and offers a nice working environment. Summer Fridays are offered to let employees to leave half day for some days during the summer, to spend more time with family. The holiday break is also very good as it's much longer than other workplaces.

    Cons

SPE is a company which is still built upon the foundations of lies. Since emails were released in 2014, attitudes have not changed. Instead, everything that people used to say in email now is simply said over the phone or in person. No one believes in the movies and everyone deeply dislikes the head of worldwide marketing.

In my department, my coworkers see SPE as backwards and often a very socially volatile place to work. International and domestic digital marketing have an ongoing feud for no reason and people named as the worst perpetrators during the the email leak still work here as producers.

Company culture is not based upon solid work effort and putting the hours in, but more about a tactical execution of who you like and don't like. Don't expect to work here and deliver outstanding results unless you hustle a deep, dark political system too. You will be valued upon your ability to work the Sony political system, not upon your experience.

Other services at Sony Pictures such as food are sub-standard compared to other studios. Technology provided is always outdated. Cubicle spaces for mid and junior team members is unreasonably small.

    Advice to Management

Execs need to be called into less meetings.

Provide promotions based upon merit, not age, longevity of bullying a VP.

Work on building a better company culture where people will feel proud to work again.

Discourage down talking of coworkers more often and provide management training to everyone with that title or above.

I worked at Sony Pictures Entertainment full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pretty studio lot with a coffee bean and yogurland. Average pay.

    Cons

They are very shortsighted. I liked the company but I saw too many very good people being eased out who were over 40, especially the clerical people. I am 31 and it scared me. I realize this is the entertainment industry but come on. Don't be so cliche when it comes to age!

    Advice to Management

Be fair. Older employees have value. Be more diverse in management hiring too. Treat interns a little better as well.

    Pros

Experienced management that has seen and been through the grind. Most managers so far have been capable. Less turnover than most other studios.

    Cons

The studio doesn't put out very high quality movies. Consistently releases flopping movie titles and even tends to ruin some of the classic favorites i.e. Ghostbusters reboot

I have been working at Sony Pictures Entertainment full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Smart people
    Very civil work environment
Company is trying to do better in all ways -- better movie slate, better work culture, better work building, etc.
Can get ahead if you're smart, hard working and dedicated
Great benefits -- great medical plan choices, nice gym, pretty lot, movie screenings

    Cons

    Some systems are very antiquated
Can be unnecessarily hierarchical, depending on which dept you're in

    Advice to Management

Since Sony is trying to be a great place for people to work, please communicate this directive to supervisors in departments that are still run in very draconian ways, to make them see the error of their ways. I have very talented friends in various departments that are not at all happy due to the bad management style of their supervisors. Take a look at the departments with a lot of employee turnover (e.g., Corporate Legal) and fix the problem starting from the top of those groups (overbearing management style, micromanaging, etc.)

    Advice to Management

It's hopeless - let the ship sink and don't bother to rebuild it

    Pros

Great company perks such as discounts, free onsite gym, weekly movie screenings and happy hour.

    Cons

Very corporate, political and hierarchical. Corporate legal department is very stale with poor management and no growth.

    Advice to Management

Value your employees. Try to be good leaders rather than narcissistic dictators. Practice modern and efficient work approaches instead of ancient ways.
