I worked at Sopheon (More than 8 years)

    Pros

strong learning culture, they pair people up with mentors and together they grow. if you're new to an area they don't berate you for not knowing it instead they help you learn it, time permitting of course. good balance of work and life, it's software, you'll eventually have to work a weekend or two but they strive to make sure it's not a constant problem.

    Cons

instability on what you're working on, you may be working on a feature one day and the next fixing a problem found by a client.

    Pros

Great people to work with who are driven to help their customers.

    Cons

This is not a must have solution for most companies so there was a constant struggle to grow the business.

"Great place to work, somewhat heavy workload"

I have been working at Sopheon full-time

    Pros

This is a great company to work for primarily because of the people. You will in general be surrounded by smart, competent individuals and flexible, understanding managers. The client services division has made a lot of new hires in the last 18 months, and many of them are great people to work with. There has also been a recent shift in the mentality of the software design that really directly supports larger customers which will likely drive growth.

The work environment is extremely flexible. No dress code unless customers are on site, flexible hours, and working from home is A-OK. Some, including managers, work from home 2-3 days a week. Everyone knows everyone, the company only has 110 or so employees, which really helps to drive a good culture.

    Cons

The workload can be a bit rough sometimes. This is frequently driven by customers. In my opinion compensation is a bit low for the work that I perform, though I wouldn't describe it as bad. We'll see if that changes once I've been around a bit longer. Health insurance isn't great (HSA high-deductible plan). 401k match was pretty bad, but was recently increased.

    Advice to Management

You're doing a good job at recognizing the workload is too high and trying to keep people from burning out. Use things like cash bonuses or comp time to help ease the burden. At the same time, while the growth is great, we should be careful to not bite off more than we can chew.

Because we're still such a small company, consider an "On your honor" time off policy instead of tracking time off. A lot of small tech companies with mainly professional level employees successfully use this.

    Pros

One of the best companies I've ever had the pleasure to work for! Team driven, you always know where you stand, and projects are managed! Cannot say enough great things about this company

    Cons

Little room for advancement if one wanted to move through the company

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing.

I worked at Sopheon full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    They paid me on time.

    Cons

This company has had a lot of employee turnover. Some people have been terminated, others get better jobs and resign. Others have been demoted.

In a meeting with one of the VPs, I and other managers in the room were told that things were slow but not to worry about our jobs. I was told "Don't go out and look for another job." A few weeks later I was terminated.

    Advice to Management

Try implementing an employee retention program.

While it may have seemed high, the retention rate in 2016 was actually 90%. That is higher than average in a technology company.

    Pros

Good management, products address valid business needs, stable employee base with minor turnover

Narrow market leads to challenging sales, not a high priority for IT spend resulting in longer sales cycles

    Pros

    Outstanding technical talent.
    Stellar IT team.
    Great culture.
    Good product.

    Cons

Often spend money in the wrong places.
Flip-flop priorities can result in customer disappointment.
    HR is lacking.
Management teams around the world have conflicting agendas.

    Advice to Management

Employees are always jabbering about how a big customer drop or failure will trigger a panic. Enter the small-business market with a "lite" product for stable revenue stream from a large number of sources. The "lite" product could be the main revenue source, a step to ubiquitous status, then charge a LOT more for the giant fish that don't conform and are getting away for next to nothing.

    Pros

Small company environment. Nice facilities. Very intelligent and professional employees. Great product.

    Cons

Company-wide bonus depends on sales department. Poor morale. Upper management doesn't seem to care about the well-being of employees. Very negative and stressful work environment.

    Advice to Management

Learn from other companies whose employees love to go to work and would recommend their company to collegues. What do these companies do to be successful all around?
