I have been working at Sophos full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Fast moving, exciting place to work. Lots of opportunity to learn and develop. Good offices. Stock options. Low on the politics and good senior management.

    Cons

Too many projects happening at once. Should scale back some ambitions to fit with budgets. Can be stressful and American management practises common. Make sure you get a good starting salary - harder to do once you are in the business.

    Advice to Management

Accept we can't afford to do everything and focus on doing a smaller amount of projects to higher quality.

I worked at Sophos full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Sophos is a brilliant company to work for, they have a very clear understanding of what they want to achieve and this is clearly communicated to its employees.

The culture is what makes Sophos a great company. They're constantly creating employee orientated days, activities and benefits. Working in the Global HQ (Oxford) is a great experience too, unusual for large security companies.

    Cons

Sophos' pay is behind the industry standard and if you're successful, you can soon reach the ceiling. Unfortunately Sophos lose a lot of good people to other companies willing to pay more.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the employee focus and pay good people more.

I have been working at Sophos full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Sophos is definitely on the rise after a tough few years. There's a renewed vigour, and some innovation. Bonuses are being paid out again and some salaries being addressed although a little too slow for some.
The office has had a revamp and is now far more colourful, with great break out areas.
Great facilities, and some very good events including Christmas party, go-karting in the car park and the "spam & lettuce" pub on Friday evenings.
So of the "old school" are complaining it's not like it used to be, but that's actually a positive. For several years it was over cautious to the point of nearly standing still. The new CEO (well he's been here several years already :) ) has brought in some good quality senior managers and has real ambition for the company.

    Cons

For those of us who've been here a long time, salaries have declined in real terms but for many this is beginning to be addressed (although not for me yet, but that's for a different reason).
Sometimes engineering can still be over cautious, and over analyse everything to the point where it's difficult to get things done but that's a hang over from how the founders ran it.

    Advice to Management

Keep focussed, don't try to do too many things at the same time, focus on the key strategic developments and do them well.

"Great place to work - just avoid the moaning dinosaurs!"

I have been working at Sophos full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The company went through a tough few years but is now really going forward. Most of the sales teams are beating targets, the company is growing and the future looks really promising. The engineering and product teams have started to deliver the goods and the strategy and roadmap is excellent and also well communicated to the teams. The CEO and senior managers have had a tough job to reinvigorate the company and i think they have done really well. It is a really great place to work, it is hard work, but fun and rewarding. If you work hard then there is good career progression, most of the sales teams have been promoted internally into the roles they are now in.

    Cons

There are still people who want to blame their own lack of motivation and advancement on everyone else. They have normally been at Sophos for ages and are sitting there waiting for someone else to sort their career out or just want it to be like "the good old days" without having the intelligence to understand that the "good old days" were what got the company into a bit of a mess in the first place. If you don't like what is happening or cant deal with change then you should just leave and get another job rather than hang around moaning, but of course this would involve actually doing something!

    Advice to Management

There are still areas that need investment in the systems and the people. Some departments are understaffed or underpaid and that needs to be remembered as not all complaints are without merit. I think training is sometimes neglected. But generally i think the managers i encounter are helpful and supportive and do a really good job of creating an environment where you can be successful, if you have the energy and motivation to take the opportunity. What is really good is that the company has a real direction and a simple strategy that everyone can buy into, and for the most part people have.

I have been working at Sophos full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Free hot drinks and subsidised food.
A few clever guys left (simply cruising and taking an average salary). No need to work hard or creative as the Sophos offerings are so far behind the competitors, the engineers don't work hard.

    Cons

Quality in products is appalling. SMT only present to 'float' the company and bale out.
Morale sucks and respect for second class SMT members that have joined within last year, is non-existent. There's actually a betting book going round for the next round of downsizing!

    Advice to Management

Sorry - there is management in title but not in practice!
Stop letting good guys leave (somehow), those with decent leadership skills depart once they realise they have been fooled into joining - it's YOUR fault!!!

I worked at Sophos full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Strong management at all levels. Very supportive of staff. Excellent working environment.

    Cons

Slow to promote strong performers. Slow to increase/improve remuneration packages.

    Advice to Management

Reward strong performers before they move to your competition (common at Sophos), takes 1-2 years to effectively replace them.

    Pros

    Great building
    Passionate development community
    Awesome (free) coffee
    Buns and fruit at 10:30
    drying room
    shower facilities
    security overlooked bike racks
    convertible parking

    Cons

Devs work with their hands tied - no training, no respect and no investment.
Banks of hardware on peoples desks rather than a VM Farm ?
Devs managing and maintaining some critical and some backup systems because they don't trust IT to have the skills or the turn around to respond to requests of the systems
Sophos spends much time and effort on managing bugs rather than fixing them
People considered and always referred to as 'resources'
Underlying feeling of chat over coffee as frowned upon therefore to be cut to a minimum
    Time is money.
Very little socialising after work - which is indicative of the shallow relationships of your team.

    Advice to Management

No Christmas parties, no summer parties, a few chosen ones get together for a day to build a go-carte? That's not Team building. £10 per person per month for team building - which managers are enthusiastically encouraged NOT to spend.
You have development managers who need to be extracted and have some time and money invested in their understanding of what is becoming standard practice in development. You employ the cream of the crop and then watch them die on the fine.
Salesperson of the month gets a prime parking space - and what motivators for developers? To be enthusiastically encouraged to work 20 hrs a day to meet Release Candidate deadlines and for what? Pizza? PLEASE.
Information sharing has no forum unless instigated and marketed by some altruistic soul. dev-chat forum ("has anyone experienced this bug in VMWaren.n") is not an alternative to a formal information sharing process.
Ask a lowly #1 Engineer to request a file to be recovered from a backup and see how long it takes IT to satisfy that req - they refuse to put in an SLA for a reason.

    Pros

Sophos has that perfect mix of interesting and intelligent people and enjoyable but always challenging job. It is relaxed but professional. That is why many people stay for a very long time.

    Cons

I suppose the main downside is that the company is not as well known and trying to position itself as a serious competitor to the big guys in malware security industry - Symantec, McAfee and Trend, though you could argue there is nothing wrong with trying to beat the best. The problem is that Sophos often acts as a follower not as a real leader.

    Advice to Management

Make sure you continue with implementation of your strategy to achieve Sophos' targets. Our bonuses depend on it.
