I worked at Sotera Defense Solutions full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The benefits were awesome and the jobs were interesting and challenging. All of the management team were great to work for and I loved the hours that I worked.

    Cons

Government contracts and they didn't seem to keep the work in my local community wanted to move the work around

    Advice to Management

Stay focused on the good employees

I worked at Sotera Defense Solutions full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - laid-back culture as far as defense companies go
    - management really cares about your career and well-being
    - DARPA work org operates independently, with almost a startup feel but without the insane hours that a startup would expect
    - great work life balance
    - solid benefits

    Cons

Unsure- can't vouch for other work orgs since I didn't experience their own subcultures

    Advice to Management

Don't push the greater company processes and bureaucracy onto the DFA org- they are one of the few groups in the industry that have a fighting chance against the defense industry brain drain.
Also, you should consider incorporating equity into your compensation packages in order to compete against silicon valley for top talent, which is the differentiator for cutting edge r&d contracts. For example, I was very well compensated by defense contractor standards but was eventually poached by an offer with similar base and bonus pay, but also an equity package that was effectively a 45% raise. This was at an established, profitable company so we're not talking start up lottery-equity either. The DFA work is enjoyable and fulfilling so I have no doubt that evening the scales compensation-wise would have a massive impact on the level of talent you attract, and by extension the contracts you land.

    Advice to Management

Negotiate better salaries if you’d like to retain your talent.

I worked at Sotera Defense Solutions full-time

    Pros

Standard benefits, human resources and management are easy to contact due to their smaller size. I hear they have tried engaging with employees more outside of work since I left in 2015.

    Cons

Could go on at length but to summarize poor pay, empty promises, and a use you until you leave mentality. Anecdote: on a large contract with several companies, all other employees with BAE, etc, got raises after a contract financial restructuring. Sotera employees were offered a small 'retention bonus' to try and keep their employees from fleeing the company.

    Pros

Good people, good benefits (at one time), fair salaries.

    Cons

Through acquisitions and changes in management this company lost its sole and direction. Put profit and growth ahead of morale and employees.

    Advice to Management

Even if you are new management due to acquisitions or changes the morale and welfare of current loyal employees may be more important than bringing in your own people and the what have you done for me lately additude.

Salaries varied per position but were always great! Management always worked to keep me billable. Benefits improved while I was there. Now that they have been acquired by KeyW I suspect opportunities and compensations will will continue to improve.

    Cons

I had no problems with anyone while working there. So why am I not there anymore? Retired!
