Great company facing difficult times

Smart and generous people. Great product. Interesting work. Mission-driven. Relatively transparent. Nice office space.
Cons
Lack of engineering leadership. Talented people leaving with frustrations over product/engineering org structure. Roles can be quite narrow, with limited opportunities to broaden experience.

Simply amazing.

This company rocks. ( I mean that, figuratively AND literally.) The people here are SO friendly and down to earth. The NY office is beautiful and spacious. Typical work hours are from 9:30-6, but everyone seems to work within their own schedule. It's just so refreshing to be at a company where everyone is actually passionate about the product, and believes in a common goal. The perks are INCREDIBLE (ie: catered lunches twice a week, snacks galore, and last but not least...real-life musical instruments for happy hour jam sessions.) Need I say more?
Cons
I really can't think of any cons. However, I guess since the company hasn't really started selling ads on the platform as of yet - there's a bit of of an unknown.

- Nice site that makes music that you don't hear anywhere else - Berlin office is cool building - Booze
Cons
- lack of knowing what to doing - Short/sighted descision making - rationalising away failure instead of owning it - Promoting dramatic, empty values instead of just saying what's up - Burning energy and people on featureless goals. (We"re going to be the best!)

Smart people, great learning opportunities, lots of politics
Dec 1, 2018 - Product Manager in BerlinRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Learning from talented people Free food Nice office
Cons
Company politics: ambitious people building power bases and fighting each other instead of the competition. I hear it got better since the layoffs.

Pros
- Good location and nice office with free snacks and food twice per week. - Known company, interesting business. - Unique and interesting problems to solve. - There are some really great and smart people, who cares. - SAT and learn budget.
Cons
- No clear strategy. Once you started to make a new feature, management changes their plans. - Disconnected management on all levels. Sometimes 10 people solve one problem. - You need to play games, politics, solve tickets but not problems, be the loudest person in the room to be promoted. - Bureaucratic - small problems take months to be resolved. - Toxic environment, very unpleasant (and illegal) situations just ignored. - Encouragement of unethical solutions on the product to have more profit.

Not a great experience
Sep 29, 2015 - Backend Engineer in BerlinRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Very nice office in a good location. The HR is great and the engineering team has some very talented people.
Cons
The technical leadership has a narrow view and it's very hard to discuss alternate solutions to alleviate the technical mess introduced by the poorly-defined microservices architecture. Actually, the technical leadership actively discourages people to discuss alternatives. The management is full of inexperienced people. For instance, I had to discuss multiple times with my manager about the term "feature". He used to think that changing a service to use another database is delivering a feature. This is an effect of the fact that very few new features are delivered to the final user and the product is stuck in a bad state. I worked there for two years and didn't deliver a single new feature to production.

The last few years SoundCloud has gone through a lot of change but despite this, has done a great job of retaining its great culture and work atmosphere. You get to work with extremely passionate people who care about their work. There is never a dull moment (if you like clock watching, this is not the place for you : ). We all take the time to celebrate our achievements. We have the opportunity to 'fix things' in the way we work. The office office space is amazing (really amazing). The work-life balance is good, but you have to be the master of your own calendar.
Cons
We're a growing company. Sometimes we move a little too quickly and wrong decisions are made but we're getting better at this and learning from these experiences.

I love working at Soundcloud because of the office culture. Soundcloud also score very well with equity and diversity.
Cons
I've only been working for a few months and so far I don't really know why, but there's a high employee churn rate.

Started out cool, got worse and worse. Needs work
Sep 25, 2016 - Anonymous Employee in New York, NYRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
- Great vacation days, parental leave, and health + dental insurance - Health and wellness budget - Learning and development budget - Fun product - Nice office - Many people devoted to making the product and company better
Cons
- Toxic people in high positions who manage not to get fired - Diversity & inclusion was said to be a priority but no one has time for it - People complain about issues but no one fixes them - Understaffed, hence the previous two points - Stressful because it's the music business - Technical career advancement is fairly impossible unless you are willing to move to Berlin - Management proficiency varies heavily because training is scarce - Some very incompetent people managed to get hired somehow - NYC office environment was very bro-y and competitive - Salary could be better for the amount and quality of work expected
