    Pros

Once the disempowered staff open up to a new person, they are mostly great people. Available parking without the hassle of having to go into the big hospitals in the city. The food is decent but the variety is poor and terribly expensive.

    Cons

I cannot speak for the other floors/units as I know some of them have excellent nurse managers and leadership, however, this is not the case in the ED. Nurse management here is shortsighted, deceptive, bullish, insensitive, disrespectful, discourteous, and just plain rude. Scheduling is extremely inflexible. Staffing is typically short. Mgmt turns a blind eye to the poor behavior of a group of older, "mean girl" nurses for whom bullying and incivility is common and openly practiced. Mgmt will promise you the world when you interview just to get you on staff, and when you mention any of those things later, you will be treated as if you hallucinated the conversation. The pay is poor. The general attitude of the administration is that they are one of the Boston hospitals re: reputation of clinical excellence and innovation, and an employee is lucky to be here. When discussing an issue with HR, I was actually told, "Your personal problem is not our problem". As soon as I heard this, I truly knew that the hospital sees its employees as nothing more as dispensable cogs in a wheel. I was horrified by this response and shocked at the lack of competence and professionalism. Overall, a poor experience.

    Advice to Management

Stop treating employees as if you did them a favor by giving them a job. Treat the staff with a little humanity, and not just your "special friends". Correct the scapegoating practice. Be honest, be supportive, be transparent. Be the leader that you were hired to be. Empower your staff. Role model acceptable behavior from the top down. Reward civility, courtesy, cooperative behavior, and manners.

I worked at South Shore Hospital (Weymouth) part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The people at South Shore Hospital really care about their patients and care about their colleagues. While working there I felt like I was part of a team that was doing something really important.

    Cons

Worked alone for most of my shifts. Hard to get any constructive feedback on my performance and there wasn't much of a career path for me to explore.

    Advice to Management

Develop more of a career path for those who work third shift so that they feel that they can grow as professionals in the position
