I worked at South State full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Vacation time and the ability to make lateral career moves or get promoted within the company. Mostly kind people to work with.

    Cons

Managements lack of leadership. Incentives became less obtainable. Annual pay increase according to job performance was minimal and a complete lack of pay increase with promotions. They instead considered the additional duties and responsibilities taken on with the new role as a "resume builder".

    Advice to Management

To the managers that are very nice, but need to take action against employees refusing to do their job. Demonstrate leadership skills and do not expect others without an authoritative position to correct the behaviors of your branch employees. Also, for managers that do not understand how to perform the duties required of them: do not expect others to do it for you and allow some of those that you rely on to do so to behave aggressively with other employees.

I worked at South State full-time

    Pros

Small Community Bank Feel but powering up with buying more banks. Friendly, humble team.

    Cons

Pats on the back are given. Promotions come slowly..for some. Quicker for others depending on your connections. Some want to see you grow while others want you to play your role and stay there. Need better raises.

    Advice to Management

Acknowledge hard work and provide loyalty for it. There are so many loyal people to South State without the reciprocation.

I worked at South State full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

great history leading up to the creation of South State Bank

    Cons

IT Department Heads do not appreciate or like to have anyone on their staff that has more experience or knowledge than they do. They are quick to dismiss recommendations and label you from that moment forward.

    Advice to Management

Get true feed back from IT employees not just the ones you know will give positive comments. Try to do a anonymous paper survey on IT Directors.

I worked at South State full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to learn A-Z of the industry and had a lot of freedom to explore new opportunities or angles for the subsidiary

    Cons

Short-term sighted, lack of discipline on hostile employees, pay not adjusted properly for increased responsibility, no real long-term opportunity

    Advice to Management

Don't be complacent, reward contribution to the company instead of tenure, don't be afraid to discplince bad behavior even if it may hurt in the short term.

    Pros

This is a solid place to start if you are looking into banking as a career. There is a good training program and they do not push the sales culture.

    Cons

The pay is pitiful. While this place is good to get the fundamentals down, it is hard to move up, especially if you are young and new to banking.
