I have been working at South Suburban Parks and Recreation part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

CARA league, runs under the philosophy of "Gymnastics skills are life skills." Great and supportive environment to work in - fun, energetic, allows for independence and creativity. Allowed to teach private lessons and work with individuals in and out of the district.

    Cons

Part-time offers no more than 28 hrs/wk, no opportunity for benefits.

I worked at South Suburban Parks and Recreation part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There are great employees at South Suburban. Most of the people I worked with were very nice and made work enjoyable.

    Cons

The pool can get really busy and you can spend most of the shift on your feet. You get minimum wage.

    Advice to Management

Raise the wage for lifeguards. Minimum wage is not sufficient and the pay rate should be $2 above minimum wage.

I worked at South Suburban Parks and Recreation part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits, very reasonable management, working outdoors is nice, flexible schedule and a good atmosphere and culture throughout the organization

    Cons

Bad IT infrastructure, limited advancement due to budget, subject to bad weather, inconvenient location. Limited budget forces things to be used long after they should be replaced

I worked at South Suburban Parks and Recreation full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good exercise, fresh air, being outside at parks and trails, learning new skills, good co-workers who care about the parks and community

    Cons

lower pay, some full timer staff and supervisors don't seem to respect the seasonal workers, working in all weather elements

    Advice to Management

Better pay, more team-building events between departments and locations, more communication between departments and staff, PTO time for seasonals would also be nice

I have been working at South Suburban Parks and Recreation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good leadership in all departments. Very friendly staff. Financially stable and will be for many years. Excellent recreation benefits for young families.

    Cons

South Suburban has many old facilities and buildings that need renovating and it reflects poorly on the District as a whole. Salaries are low in comparison to other government salaries.

    Advice to Management

Retain staff by paying them at least what other employers are offering or you will continue to lose great employees.
