I have been working at SouthStar Energy Services full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Extremely laid back office environment. Nobody is monitoring your activities, nor is anybody keeping track of when you enter and leave for the day. Everybody treats each other with respect, even the top executives. Completely stress-free environment, which you normally don't find in corporate environments. The pay and benefits are extremely generous, and there are bonus incentives to encourage employees to meet self-determined goals. The location is in the heart of midtown, a great hub of culture, restaurants, and public transportation.

    Cons

The only cons are it's a smaller company. Everything is lean, and everyone is expected to contribute, because it'll apparent if someone is not carrying their weight. Having a smaller staff means that you'll most likely end up working with everyone at some point, whether you want to or not.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great job, but keep expanding and bringing on more team members.

    Pros

The HQ is in a great location for GA Tech Students and urban city dwellers.

    Cons

Management is limited in thinking and not forward looking. The company is still operating according to the old order rules of business instead of embracing the new international order of doing business. The company is putting company satisfaction ahead of customer satisfaction.

    Advice to Management

Open your minds to new opportunities and methods of intelligence.Be clear and specific on the type of employee that should be hired to grow this company.

    Pros

Great work/life balance, good compensation and benefits, knowledgeable workforce

    Cons

Little to no diversity at the top. All the VPs are white men. Out of a company of 90 employees there is only one female managing director. There are three female directors, one of which is African American and she is the only one the company has had in its 15 year existence. Numerous employees have been there 6+ years and have not been promoted. They seem to get the runaround from superiors as it relates to advancement.

    Advice to Management

Please take a good, honest look at why racial minorities aren't advancing and do something to correct it.

    Pros

A major player in the natural gas market in GA and other states with lots of internal knowledge about the natural gas energy.

    Cons

Internally the company is not organized and engages in lots of politics. It's a smaller operation than it appears and offers little room for advancement. Lots of cross-funcational infighting with no clear leadership or lines of reporting. Managers in place play favorites and there is lots of micro-management from the top despite regulatory missteps and $2mm in fines from the GA PSC.

    Advice to Management

Lear to organize and lead cross functionally. Minimize unnecessary politics.

    Pros

The business is fairly easy to understand, people are very nice, and the pace is pretty relaxed. Deregulated retail gas markets are a pretty interesting business both from a commodity and competitive perspective. Southstar as the top marketer in Georgia definitely has a great viewpoint to learn about those markets.

    Cons

You will be under-utilized. Another poster mentioned management lock-down on positions and it's true, there is very little likelihood of getting a meaningful increase in responsibility unless you're on the trading floor. For a small company, it's pretty hierarchical. Pay is mediocre, and the vesting period for the 401K period is outrageous (5 yrs) and not straight-lined.
