I worked at Southeastern Grocers full-time

    Pros

Autonomy was great, allowed to utilize your own skills, creativity, and design choices for case displays with minimum oversight by management, very appreciative management & customers, ability to speak in person one-on-one with customers to collaborate and fulfill their own creative ideas, or assist in choosing appropriate flowers, potted plants, or designs based on their event, gift recipient hobbies, religious restrictions, age, gender, favorite colors, etc... on the spot (this was a true joy!). At independent floral shops, you may spend the vast majority of your day in a workroom churning out production/recipe designs with only occasional creative input on your part, struggling with the never-ending conundrum of product substitutions due to limited stock you have little control over, & constantly being interrupted to answer the phone for new orders - but NOT at this employer! Stock is plentiful, design categories may be limited, but you are allowed to utilize your own creativity and choices with the designs needed, very limited phone interruptions, and complete control over your stock and reordering. There is much to enjoy about this job with this employer.

    Cons

Must be standing on your feet, very quickly hauling, unpacking, and breaking down several heavy boxes of floral department stock for much of the scheduled shift - no accommodations for any disability at this job. You must be very young and fit or you will, physically, not last long. Saturday is "balloon day" (for customers' weekend parties & celebrations). Helium is always very low in stock (there is a national helium shortage), & no other employees at the store will assist with balloons because it is labor and time-intensive, with increasingly impatient customers becoming very angry they must wait in line so long (all of the employees hated "balloon day" & will avoid being near the floral department, so you are on your own dealing with it all). There is no way to avoid raw, bleeding hands at the end of every Saturday shift. You get almost zero designing, stocking time, or breaks/lunch on Saturdays due to the overload of customers wanting multiple balloons all day on Saturdays. They should implement "pre-orders only" when customers want multiple balloons, but this is not a consideration by the store at this time. Prepare to have doctors' bills for painful conditions in your hands, feet, and legs to develop because of the repetitive, labor intensive work with no allowance to sit on a raised stool during times you normally would at a regular flower shop or design studio - such as when standing still at the counter to complete multiple floral arrangements & assembling gifts. Beware, most of the flowers come from Central and South America where heavy use of pesticides and herbicides are the norm. The company does not inform you that handling that large of a quantity of flowers with those toxic chemicals is a serious health hazard and cancer risk over the course of time. Customers purchasing arrangements are at extremely low risk due to their limited exposure, but if it is your job to handle these flowers, en masse everyday, BEWARE! Also, the highly toxic old style floral foam is still used by this company. Many modern florists refuse to work with it due to how carcinogenic it was discovered to be. You have no choice but to work with these cheaper items, and will not be informed of their hazard. Purchase & wear your own disposable gloves, long sleeve shirts, and a florist's apron, at all times. Launder your work clothes & apron every day after your shift to counteract these issues, and you will be okay.
