I have been working at Southern Company as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Benefits. The benefits are absolutely amazing, even for Co ops. The pay is more than fair, especially considering that students can get help with tuition and housing. Getting a Co Op here is basically securing a job for the foreseeable future, which is quite nice! Work is at work, Home is at home - you aren't expected (in fact, you're discouraged) to take your work home with you.

    Cons

Some of the technology is a bit older, and there is the usual bureaucracy, but for the most part, this doesn't get in the way.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work!

I have been working at Southern Company full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits package, and a portion of your pay is variable based on performance (both individual and or organizational) and so there is a strong incentive for excellence. There is a robust program for promotion and transfer within the company to retain talent.

    Cons

The culture is highly compartmentalized along departments and they do not interface very well. As an Engineer, you should be prepared to have sudden 'requirements' pressed on you - at the end of the design cycle, and even though you've been talking with them since the start. Supervisors and management also doesn't listen to feedback.

I worked at Southern Company full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Long term career opportunities--can move between different parts of the business to expand knowledge

    Relatively stable growth

    Good benefits, great co-workers

    Cons

    Hierarchy is static
Hard to assimilate if you didn't "grow up" at Southern
Energy world is changing and employment opportunities are shrinking. More reorganization and job reductions are coming.

I have been working at Southern Company full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits, subsidized child care, and a fully funded pension. Also, there is a pleasant blend of employees at different tenure levels.

    Cons

Tenure based promotion is more common than merit based promotion. I have found, despite higher management's desire to advance my career, Human Resources is holding firm to an arbitrary one year between promotions.

    Advice to Management

Continue to go big in the fuel mix of the future; natural gas and nuclear with a solid foray into solar

I have been working at Southern Company full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

You become part of a family and it's exciting to be part of a Company that's innovating in an industry that has pretty much been stagnant for 50 years.

    Cons

Some policies make no sense and serve no purpose, like having to tell management before you travel. That's just way too invasive (and none of the Company's business).

    Advice to Management

More upward assessments and 360s, please. There are some serious bad apples among management in IT. It's been WAY too long since we had an upward assessment of our manager, and my department has had the same manager for over 10 years. Suffice it to say we're miserable. But, our SLT is either clueless to our misery or willfully blind.

I have been working at Southern Company (Less than a year)

    Pros

Southern i s a great company to work for. they take good care of their employees.

    Cons

Southern is slow to promote and is based solely on relationships. it is also slow to get rid of bad managers and slow to adopt progressive policies.
