    Pros

    Hard working employees
    Fair compensation
    Fair work/life balance

    Cons

    Manipulative upper management
    Nepotism
    No career path
    Culture change

    Advice to Management

Southern Style should apply to management same as employees. Southern was a great employer when I started a decade ago but the culture has changed completely.

    Pros

You become part of a family and it's exciting to be part of a Company that's innovating in an industry that has pretty much been stagnant for 50 years.

    Cons

Some policies make no sense and serve no purpose, like having to tell management before you travel. That's just way too invasive (and none of the Company's business).

    Advice to Management

More upward assessments and 360s, please. There are some serious bad apples among management in IT. It's been WAY too long since we had an upward assessment of our manager, and my department has had the same manager for over 10 years. Suffice it to say we're miserable. But, our SLT is either clueless to our misery or willfully blind.

    Pros

Southern i s a great company to work for. they take good care of their employees.

    Cons

Southern is slow to promote and is based solely on relationships. it is also slow to get rid of bad managers and slow to adopt progressive policies.

I worked at Southern Company full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people really want to do what is right and work hard to accomplish their tasks.

    Cons

Management is not eager to keep up with technology changes and push aside those that bring it to their attention. Assignment of responsibilities without the backing of management to get it done.

    Advice to Management

Listen to those that accept and recommend change more. Just because "the lights are on" and "that's the way we have always done it" mean status quo will continue to be successful.

    Pros

Great work environment and people to work with. Great projects to work on.

    Cons

Under staff due to budget constraints. Contractors usually never get hired on permanent. Approximately 40% of employees are contractors. Employees who has been at the 40 plus years do not care to go the extra step to get the work done. Either they past the buck or leave the work not completed.
The company is currently going through layoffs and company restructuring.

    Advice to Management

Understand your employees job duties and what it takes to get the job done. Provide the needed valuable for each job function.

I have been working at Southern Company full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good pay. Good bonus - you are paid regardless of your individual performance - it's more like a profit-sharing plan. Good benefits (although the healthcare premiums are very expensive). Nice working environment. A good place to work if you truly value work-life balance. Nice co-workers.

    Cons

This company is a solid company but definitely not for everyone. Very old-school. The culture is a bureaucratic good-ol boy network - even though they talk about changing it, it doesn't change. They say they want new and innovative thinking but they really only want it in certain areas and limited ways. They don't really respect external experience or know how to leverage it. Everything is very internally focused on the Southern experience and Southern Style. If you are a progressive thinker or someone who likes to ask questions and push the envelope you will feel stifled here. Many decisions require buy-in and support from key stakeholders across 8 operating companies and take a long time. The sad thing is many of the decision-makers got to their position based on relationships - this has the highest value above all else at Southern. Progress and change often stall out because of this. Careers stall out here, too. It's a relatively flat company for it's size and turnover is VERY low so career growth opportunities are few and far between. Those who get to move ahead are typically those who are savvy at navigating politically and willing to come in and eat humble pie regularly.

    Advice to Management

Focus on evolving the culture of the company and introducing intentional development opportunities (experiences, changes in roles) at the early - mid career levels. Become a real pay-for-performance culture and hold your leaders accountable for really knowing how to lead others, develop and grow them vs. being just focused on their business results.
