    Pros

Good pay. Good bonus - you are paid regardless of your individual performance - it's more like a profit-sharing plan. Good benefits (although the healthcare premiums are very expensive). Nice working environment. A good place to work if you truly value work-life balance. Nice co-workers.

    Cons

This company is a solid company but definitely not for everyone. Very old-school. The culture is a bureaucratic good-ol boy network - even though they talk about changing it, it doesn't change. They say they want new and innovative thinking but they really only want it in certain areas and limited ways. They don't really respect external experience or know how to leverage it. Everything is very internally focused on the Southern experience and Southern Style. If you are a progressive thinker or someone who likes to ask questions and push the envelope you will feel stifled here. Many decisions require buy-in and support from key stakeholders across 8 operating companies and take a long time. The sad thing is many of the decision-makers got to their position based on relationships - this has the highest value above all else at Southern. Progress and change often stall out because of this. Careers stall out here, too. It's a relatively flat company for it's size and turnover is VERY low so career growth opportunities are few and far between. Those who get to move ahead are typically those who are savvy at navigating politically and willing to come in and eat humble pie regularly.

    Advice to Management

Focus on evolving the culture of the company and introducing intentional development opportunities (experiences, changes in roles) at the early - mid career levels. Become a real pay-for-performance culture and hold your leaders accountable for really knowing how to lead others, develop and grow them vs. being just focused on their business results.

    Pros

Great location, lots of people who love their job there. The work is always fascinating and the company is diversifying, so it continues to be dynamic and grow

    Cons

Mostly people don't leave the company- they just move around within. Not really a negative, but if thats the worst thing that can be said, they are doing something right

    Advice to Management

Continue to promote from within and listen to the ideas that come from all of the different internal programs and contests

    Cons

Not a lot of room for growth
Upper management hired from other sites
    High turnover rate

    Advice to Management

More involvement with the staff and training to allow current engineers to move up in the company instead of transferring out of the department

    Pros

Typical laid back utility job. Some departments offer a 4 day per week schedule. Others offer every other Friday off.

    Cons

Typical laid back utility job. Management does not seems to value their technical folks. This causes many employees to try to go the management track solely for compensation.

    Advice to Management

Put more emphasis on technical knowledge for your engineering staff. This will help you keep the talented folks you have. This will also keep everyone from trying to get on the management track day 1.

    Pros

Benefits package is better than normal.

    Cons

If not an engineer, then promotional opportunities are fewer.

    Advice to Management

While this is an engineering company, those with other credentials such as education, experience, and attitude should also be taken into consideration when filling positions. Sometimes an engineer can make a strong team leader or supervisor, but so can others who are not engineers can make great leaders of a team.
