I have been working at Southern Company full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great benefits package that starts on day one. Company provided pension plan. Merryl Lynch 401K program with company match. Steady work.

    Cons

Good ole boy network! Supervision is always changing and no backbone with security supervisors! 12-hour rotating shifts plus a before shift briefing for each oncoming shift! Very long days! No life balance without 18 or more years seniority! Other company employees are continuously trying to get security personnel in trouble!

    Advice to Management

Be consistent! Listen to your employees!

The only one I can think of is starting base pay isn't competitive with the nuclear industry.

    Pros

The location had a gym and a decent cafeteria.

    Cons

The monopoly that is Southern Company is terrible. The feudal system under which contract workers there operate is entirely unfair. The nepotism of this place is ridiculous. The mere notion that you would have someone work a contract position anywhere from 10-15 years and yet you offer permanent positions to underqualified new contract workers simply because they have family that are employees is terrible. This company has 100's of contractors that make up 50-55% of their staff and yet these people are strung along for years and treated like sub standard human beings. Fortunately, I negotiated a decent wage with my contractor, so it made the politics worth my time. However, this was only for a short while.

    Advice to Management

Restructure your employment policies and hire from the contractors that have been loyal for years.

I have been working at Southern Company full-time

    Pros

People across the company are very courteous and helpful. While some more modern benefits like childcare and maternity/paternity should improve, Southern Company has great overall benefits, especially for health, savings, retirement. The safety culture and work/life balance are superb. The opportunities for training and getting experience in different business units is a strong plus, as well. Salaries and bonuses are very good for the region. Finally, Southern Company's reputation and role in the community are stellar.

    Cons

Maternity / paternity leave and childcare benefits are behind the times and so is diversity at the executive level. The company has too many silos and middle managers, which creates too many gatekeepers of information and therefore roadblocks to efficiency and innovation. Leaders in the company pay lip service to innovation constantly, but they're usually not willing to take on the necessary risk to actually innovate.

    Advice to Management

Work on making the company leaner, consolidating and eliminating functions that are redundant or not really necessary anymore. It is good that the company appreciates its talent and treats people very well, but the more bulk makes us less adaptive and agile. It also allows for more subcultures to develop that might not completely share the same vision as the company as a whole.

I have been working at Southern Company full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Pension! Annual cash bonus. Great coworkers

    Cons

Not cutting edge, conservative, promotion to Mgmt based on who you know or those with "diversity"

    Advice to Management

Be more progressive. Get rid of brick and mortar. Calls centers don't need a building. Employees should be work at home wherever possible.

I worked at Southern Company full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You are able to see the operations of a large scale facility. The co-ops were treated especially well and given a lot of freedom. If you want to be involved in plant maintenance, this is a good career.

    Cons

Some work was documentation related instead of engineering analysis since you are not qualified as a co-op for some evaluations.

    Advice to Management

Provide the co-ops with training of the facilities so they have a better understanding of plant operations.

I have been working at Southern Company full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The company provides freedom to technical experts.

    Cons

There are too many layers of management that does not have much work to do other than attend meetings and impose themselves upon topics they have a superficial knowledge of.

    Advice to Management

Please reduce the number of managers who are costing the company huge salaries without adding any value. Their bloated salary takes away from the compensation of employees.
