I worked at Southern Maine Medical Center full-time

    Pros

For most part, good co-workers, hours great, main supervisor good guy. Really liked working there.

    Cons

Off site parking very inconvenient and not enough provided, no on-site handicap parking for employees. Long-term employees get ALL perks 'earned'.

    Advice to Management

Give some 'earned' perks to newer employees, who are not eligible for most other perks. Get pereagent off site parking site with enough spaces for your employees, & have more shuttle buses

I have been working at Southern Maine Medical Center full-time

    Pros

    Great coworkers; no other pros.

    Cons

Poor management who are afraid of change. Don't bother expressing your opinion if it differs from their ideas; you'd be wasting your breath. Rehab employees are forced to treat conditions that they are not trained to treat, therefore potentially causing harm to patients. PTO is being curbed, yet management continues to receive raises.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees; you'd be amazed at how a little communication with your staff can improve morale.

    Pros

Good benefits package, strong executive management visibility through Gemba walks

    Cons

Difficult to advance career level within organization, poor communication to staff regarding results of surveys meant to benefit the employee and organization

    Advice to Management

Have a better understanding of how a practice functions and provides care to patients before suggestioning merging of sites or cutting of positions

I have been working at Southern Maine Medical Center (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Fortunately for the patients there are many wonderful physicians, NPs, PAs, allied health professionals and others working here who care about delivering consistently safe, effective care and supporting each other. The work environment, on a personal level, is mostly friendly and supportive. If you are fortunate enough to have a good manager, your work life will be good. Some positions pay well for the area.

    Cons

Senior management is out of touch with reality and the struggles of employees at all levels. Very little common sense is shown in decision making. Bullying is condoned. Great variety of ability and professionalism among managers and supervisors. Many people are allowed to stay in jobs who are not productive or professional. Advancement only comes for those whose bosses are part of the inner circle. Pay raises stuck at 2% (or less) per year unless your boss is part of inner management circle.

    Advice to Management

Time for an overhaul of senior management. Stop listening to each other and pay attention to those employee opinion surveys!

I worked at Southern Maine Medical Center (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Southern Maine Medical Center has a great staff and is a very well run organization that really seems to value the employees.

    Cons

Well, this goes with the emergency medicine career, no matter the organization, but long hours and often times a frenetic pace. Being in Southern Maine, near a vacation destination; the pace of the workload is often based on the season.

    Advice to Management

Keep modernizing and expanding the facility.
Keep providing educational and advancement opportunities for the staff.
Should strive to expand the emergency capabilities to meet Trauma Level One standards.

    Cons

traffic getting to and from work could be difficult at times-- i traveled 45 mins to work- the summer is very busy, local hospital for many vacationers

I have been working at Southern Maine Medical Center full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Aside from being gainfully employed and enjoying the company of my coworkers there are very few pros that come to mind.

    Cons

Southern Maine Medical Center recently had a consulting /efficiency firm visit the hospital to look for ways to save money. The result was a significant amount of lay-offs and benefit reductions amongst other changes. There is very minimal opportunity for pay raises or bonuses. the max pay raise is 2% per year. The majority of these issues are a reflection of the financial state of the hospital due to outside factors but it does not change the fact that the cons far outweigh the pros.
