I worked at Southern Petroleum Laboratories full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The group I worked with was phenomenal in their knowledge of our business and what was required to make things work best for customers. My direct leader is smart, fair, and supportive.

    Cons

Dysfunctional working environment. Lack of direction - sustained direction. Poor communication from the top down and bottom up. Ideas oar shot down in public discussions, embarrassing those who share ideas when asked. I personally was asked to lead three separate initiatives for a company not at all known for customer/user technology, specifically SCADA/Automation/Software. Currently customers do not at all associate the company with such offerings, let along the net-new companies sought after. I was asked to provide research on what was called a "wing to wing" solution - providing production measurement services, technology, analysis, allocations, and ultimately royalty pay out. I was also mandated to sell to existing customers and new customers, all while trying to build a solution. The focus was unclear.

    Advice to Management

Much better, more frequent communication on direction. Just because the company and its members are all part of the ownership, it is far more difficult to manage those who believe they have a say-so in how things should be done, e.g. we've alway done it that way. Experts in business strategy say that is one of the most dangerous premises on which to operate. Back-biting is prevalent, by grown men who claim to be professional. Silos prevent true collaboration to better the business, but i witnessed no movement to improve that. During a recent strategy session, it was clear people were not at all open to new ideas or constructive criticism. The timeframe in which I was expected to bring SCADA opportunities in a down market to a company no one associates SCADA with was unrealistic.
In my previous role, it took me 3 years to build SCADA business in the US for a company dead-focused on SCADA and technology growth. The problem with SPL is too many people are given the authority to move in too many directions and the CEO avoids confrontation to manage said directions at all costs.
