I have been working at Southern Refrigerated Transport full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good equipment. Decent miles. Dispatch folks are, in general, knowledgeable and easy to deal with. Safety dept is, like many other co's, a group of folks who enjoy making drivers squirm. Payroll? Keep your eye on them...

    Cons

High corporate turnover rate, combined with a corporate culture that denigrates drivers makes contact with anyone other than dispatch a nightmare. Shop and breakdown dept's are in general easy to work with and serious about what they do.

    Advice to Management

Don't simply give lip service to drivers, inculcate a REAL culture of fair and respectful relations with them. Too often msg's are sent over QC saying basicly 'we love you guys! We're here for you!' When in all honesty few if any of the drivers sense that in their communications with corporate.

    Pros

    Zero. Nothing. Zip.

    Cons

Filthy trucks....I'm taking roaches which are impossible to get rid of. ...
Women, watch out. Most men are foulmouthed & disrespectful ....

    Advice to Management

You've gotta do something or you're going to end up w/legal errorproblems.
I highly recommend hiring some faux workers (IN ALL DEPARTMENTS)sending them in undercover wearing hidden cameras.....
I find it very hard to believe that upper mgt doesn't know what they're doing to people.

I also never understood how these companies refuse to address what they've ALL already figured out. .....this is why they have turn over rates significantly higher than average. ...for YEARS AT A TIME.

If I were the CEO I'd give up ANYTHING and EVERYTHING to ensure my employees were HAPPY and well paid. What kind of person wouldn't want that?
    Ooh. ....I know 'who'......

I worked at Southern Refrigerated Transport full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The motel and food they give you for orientation was pretty good.

    Cons

You are treated like a number, and they lie about your pay just to get you to orientation. They told me 41 cents and only making 29 cents. Also with the per-dem it's lower than that. There truck are dirty and filthy inside. You will have to extra clean it out.

    Advice to Management

Image is everything. Dirty trucks say a lot about a company. If you promised a person his/her pay rate don't short change them after they finish orientation. Also treat your drivers with the respect you want in return.

I worked at Southern Refrigerated Transport full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Ave run was about 1000 miles. 48 state carrier for those who can live just about anywhere and take time off where they want.

    Cons

When got near a yard, they would ask to do a local that a lot of times would be a very early del like 3:00am. If you refused it they would threaten to kick you out of truck, and say if you don't do it you will be charged for a abandoned truck. Company culture was not one of respect unless you were there yes man. Also they did not authorize truck washes. Most drivers paid for it out of there pocket or drove a totally filthy truck. There trucks were baseline, did not have wrap around curtains or larger side windows or a second side box . They will allow 1000 watt inverter, but there is no fridge.

    Advice to Management

Respect your driver's more. Upgrade your trucks and allow 1 truck wash a month. That is reasonable. When I was at Texarkana most trucks were not even cleaned, much less detailed. Don't threaten to put a abandoned truck on a employees record if he or she sais no on a rare occasion.

    Pros

Office staff and dispatches are always helpful. Surprisingly they work with you for home time.

    Cons

After 6 months of working for SRT my pays got cut basically in half and sent me a message over Qualcomm about it. Been nicer if they would have called.

    Advice to Management

Don't pay someone good money then after 6 months bump there pay to half.

    Pros

They are small enough to get personal with the drivers and if you are a decent human being they will treat you as such. If your a professional about your job they will have no problem getting you miles. It Will always be up and down as that is the industry, but for the most part you will keep rolling if you know how to communicate properly.

    Cons

payroll Can Use A Lot of help! If you keep track of your pay you will eventually get back paid but you will have to do their job for them.

    Advice to Management

Automatic pay on detention , late home time, etc .
And PO#s for lumpers that refuse to give anything other then paper receipts. Why should the driver wait a month plus to get reimbursed because they only gave him a paper receipt?
