I worked at Southern Season full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Relatively easy money for a waiter.

    Cons

If you're reading glassdoor reviews you're aware of the company's past. The business at the restaurant has dwindled along with the company.

    Advice to Management

Reduce prices and be more consistent, maybe business will come back eventually.

I worked at Southern Season full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good people who really cared about the industry and great products. Unique high end niche in the marketplace.

    Cons

The old owners and their giant egos had no idea what they were doing and spent all of the investors' money. Hence, the bankruptcy. The new owner bought the one flagship at at a steal but didn't know what to do with it when he got it. No communication, no vision and no plan. And he "dumbed down" the store with many of the mainstream products he was used to, not the unique products that made Southern Season so special. Sad. By the way, the president, Dave Herman, is a good guy with lots of high end experience, but he has never been allowed to make the decisions and run it the way he could.

    Advice to Management

Just sell it again for a profit,

I worked at Southern Season part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Nice coworkers. Time and a half on Holidays.

    Cons

Chaos, Upheaval, and Bad Morale. Since the bankruptcy, to the new ownership- there has been very little communication or transparency.

    Advice to Management

    Best of Luck!

    Pros

    Valuable learning experience
    Friendships forged
    Enjoyed the product discounts

    Cons

At the time, really bad decision makers were at the company helm.

    Advice to Management

This advice is for the new company who just purchased SS. You have an incredible core group of people at the CH store and in the corporate offices. Don't blow them off. They're valuable to you.

    Pros

I worked at the Southern Season in Richmond, VA for almost 2 years. It was a great store, with wonderful products, and everyone who worked there was very knowledgeable and customer service focused.

    Cons

The most horribly managed company I have ever seen. Given that they are now in bankruptcy I suppose that's not surprising.

    Advice to Management

I hope the new management can restore this company to the great place it originally was but I feel they will have a lot to overcome.

I worked at Southern Season full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Local staff and vendors were great to work with. Lots of good people and talent. Corporate not so much. They don't pay vendors, or care about their staff.

    Cons

Corporate was a nightmare, bad CEO, bad director of operations. Southen Season was the worst job I've ever had. The benefits sucked, 401k with nothing matched, they didn't pay out PTO. Very demanding upper management. They closed the store and restaurant and used the press release to advertise their newer stores because they can't pay for advertising.

    Advice to Management

Stick to investing, not running good companies into the ground.

    Pros

I honestly can not provide any positive feedback. Local management were great but not in control of the decisions

    Cons

Worst experience of my career. There is no truth in the commitments made on behalf of the company

    Advice to Management

Maybe this isn't the right industry for you

I worked at Southern Season full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Only positive was the people in the team, they were all great to work with minus management.

    Cons

Terrible management, senior management has run the company into the ground with ideas that are not sustainable and now having to declare bankruptcy. Sad to see a company that is such a cool concept go down in flames. You should have stayed in Chapel Hill bad not expanded.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees with the respect they deserve. Stop expanding when you have no money to even stock the shelves of product in your store.

I have been working at Southern Season full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great products, beautiful stores and nice co-workers who really care.

If you are looking for a part-time store job it's probably a great place to work. If you're looking for a career, stay away.

    Cons

This company is run by an investment firm (basically the CEO and CFO) whose sole purpose is to spend as little money as possible while still making everything look attractive to investors (Chinese are the target now). Salaries are low, benefits are barely acceptable, vendors are not paid, turnover is very high (through people quitting in frustration and frequent firings to eliminate salaries) and the whole ship seems on the verge of sinking. With all the shady money dealings this would probably be a very good company for the feds to audit. It's very sad because this is a great brand I believe in and I want to see succeed, but that's not going to happen with its current leadership team.

    Advice to Management

To the CEO: Step way back and actually let people do their jobs. No CEO of a company this site needs to nit-pick every little detail like is done here.
