I worked at Southern Star full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You get to meet new people everyday. You get to work outside and alone for the most part. I enjoyed most of my customers.

    Cons

The corporate culture is crap. Everyone above the regional manager is absolutely clueless when it comes to hiring good employees. When I first started it wasn't that bad. You were paid piece rate based on the jobs you did. That meant you were in full control of your earning potential. Once they changed to hourly the company started getting more and more worthless. I don't understand how they expect to not only retain but attract hard working employees. I would not be surprised if this company gets shut down when they can't keep enough employees to work for them. I feel bad for the FSM's who get paid crap salary to deal with the ridiculous standards corporate pushes them to enforce.

Another downside is the lack of family time. If you want to work very uncertain hours and be told you have to work mandatory days at last minute notice then this is the job for you. With no experience be prepared to start out at $11 while training, $12 when you go solo and a whopping $13 after your first 90 days. If you have prior experience don't expect much more. The medical benefits are also a joke and adding your family members will pretty much drain your check. Also be fully prepared to work in pouring rain, sleet, snow, extreme heat and freezing cold.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees! Stop changing the goals on a whim and have some consistency. Also manage things that are fully within your control, like paying your employees more than peanuts to do a job that is this demanding. Your technicians and FSM's are the primary people who keep your business going, start treating them as such or don't be surprised when all the good workers find better, more rewarding jobs.

I worked at Southern Star full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    -Company vehicle and Phone
    -Company Uniform (used and damaged)
-Provided most Tools (some damaged but usable)
-Very poor training program, they really throw you to the wolves if you have no prior experience
-Incentive pay based on production and sales

    Cons

-Unrealistic Sales goals, Required to sale TV related products
-Very little difference in work volume expectations between novice and experts
-Often ran out of supplies at main warehouse, even asked me to spend my own money at times to purchase items with promise of reimbursement
-Very inconsistent hours/Would either work 20 hours a week of 50-60 hrs
-Training in classroom was often ignored in the field and I was instructed to cut corners

    Advice to Management

Recognize the work expectations should be drastically different between novice and expert worker, stop focusing so much on selling and focus more on quality or work, leadership at regional level should not tell techs to cut corners

    Cons

Industry change can cause a need for fast reaction times.
