I worked at Southern States full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Improved employee benefits over the last few years, decent compensation, opportunities for advancement within organization, high rate of employee retention

    Cons

An older company with very slow acceptance of new technology, difficult to incite change or implement new ideas due to multiple levels of approval and reluctance to change "how things have always been done." Layoffs happen every couple of years.

    Advice to Management

A higher standard of consistency and decisiveness would be appreciated by staff.

I worked at Southern States (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent benefits. Certain managers were on board to making changes to make a difference with how the company was run.

    Cons

Senior management had a difficult time of letting go of the good ole' boy system.

I worked at Southern States full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

In general, most of the people I worked with were very pleasant and friendly. With a few exceptions, everyone cared about the quality of the work they were doing. Those who were known for slacking were laid off in 2012. Work life balance is great (8-4:30 with an hour lunch). Cooperate office has a cafeteria on site.

    Cons

Middle level management has been there forever. There were no fresh and new ideas coming in. Felt like patching holes. Outdated processes and procedures. Same raise every year for each employee done by percentage.

    Advice to Management

Best way to motivate people is money. A 2% raise is not going to keep talented people around. Make room for the younger generation to shine and take leadership. Look into updating your technology.

I have been working at Southern States full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The flexibility of being a sales rep is wonderful, benefits of having a car, phone, and other electronics are a huge plus. Most accounts are great to work with, developing both work relationships and personal friendships.

    Cons

Many lonely hours driving on the road, inconsistent sales goals, and feeling of "always working". The company is not very progressive or quickly receptive to those working in the field.

I worked at Southern States as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The people were down to earth and very welcoming.

    Cons

I had nothing to do and got paid $13/hour as an accounting intern. The program was new and there was not much structure.

    Advice to Management

To keep interns, please give them work to do.

I worked at Southern States full-time

    Pros

Great discount, fun to work with farmers, not traditional retail

    Cons

Little to no strategy from leadership, each district is run completely different from one another, no consistency in HR policy (which makes developing and leading teams very difficult)

    Advice to Management

Either give each store autonomy to run as a micro-regional unit, or have a consistent strategy for each type... The middle ground is not a winning place to exist long term.

    Pros

Many good co-workers, family friendly, nice office, good benefits. There is a good amount of potential if upper management looks to the future and puts some reorganization in place. Many experienced personnel to learn from with lots of industry knowledge.

    Cons

As stated above, some of the pros turn into cons such as there is potential however the coop mentality must change. Too much internal competition keeping prices and profits down. Also many management personnel who have been around a while need to be open to change so the company can move forward. Seem to hire people and then a few years later lay off people so hard to keep new recruits to bring change to the company.

    Advice to Management

Change is needed so look for it soon.

It's just a good ol boy system very political to advance

    Pros

The people are great, the benefits are great, vaction time as soon as you hire on as well as insurane

    Cons

its a feed mill dirty, dusty, and hard work, the pay is very minimum

    Advice to Management

Raise the pay because we are one of the hghest and most productive feed mills on the east coast yet we get paid the least
