I worked at Southwark Council full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent training dept, prospects & promotion were good for staff. A diverse workforce that reflected the borough. Diverse & dynamic.

Overall a LA that invested in it's staff, had a vision for the future. Well resourced, committed managers, who were helpful, flexible & supportive.

    Cons

Very high levels of deprivation, transient population. A difficult place to be a front-line social worker. But an authority that liked to see things through.

    Advice to Management

Remember that your staff are your greatest asset. Remember to keep investing in the future...

I have been working at Southwark Council full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    • Nice work environment, people are very friendly.
    • Good communication with managers who are readily available.
    • Hours are exceptional as the office is open 7am-7pm, but you will work based on your hours I.E 36 per week etc…
    • Flexi-time for full-time staff is extremely helpful if you have children or just fancy a lie in.
    • Availability to move around departments is encouraged.
    • Office is nice and only a short walk to London Bridge station.
    • Salary high compared to other councils outside of London.
    • Equality and diversity encouraged.

    Cons

    • At the moment people are being made redundant which is worrying if you’ve been there a long time.
    • Customers can be belligerent and malicious over the phone which makes it difficult to keep a cool head sometimes. Especially when they purposely work less so they can claim more from the tax payer.

I have been working at Southwark Council full-time

    Pros

if you work in a progressive, supportive team like in most companies you'll be fine as long as you do what is required of you

    Cons

internal recruitment biased, struggled to make it passed interview process not given any real feedback

    Advice to Management

my manager has been great extremely supportive, for other not so supportive managers monitoring should be done to decrease bullying and isolation at work

I have been working at Southwark Council part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The policy& perks. No problems with working for Southwark Council. Can be flexible if have a good manager and team.

    Cons

You can become another number as you are a council employee. All policies are in the handbook. IT support can be crap!

    Advice to Management

I work for Southwark under 2 capacities. One a part timer& another as a student. Both upper management have been fab!

I have been working at Southwark Council full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Most departments work flexible hours and the annual leave entitlement and pension is very generous. Good location and beautiful Office.

    Cons

There is a very evident "if your face fits" culture within the Organisation. Unless you're face fits your opinion counts for nothing, you are not taken seriously and your opportunities for career advancement are zero.

    Advice to Management

Managers have no idea how to Manage. Lower level Managers seem afraid of Senior Management and therefore are reluctant to challenge them when the need arises.

I have been working at Southwark Council full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    1. Flexible working with a flexi working and the ability to work from home are excellent. 2. Modern office in an excellent part of central London.

    Cons

    1. Training is not as expansive as it should be. 2. Too much working in silos and not enough inter disciplinary working. Often left to ones own initiative to break down walls.

    Advice to Management

    1. To trust employees and not micro manage too much. 2. Allow more inovation so we can experiment with things to provide better services.

I have been working at Southwark Council full-time

    Pros

Opportunities to progress, training schemes, central London location, pension scheme, holiday allowance, modern building and facilities, reasonable pay for local authority in central London.

    Cons

As with most local authorities, poor retention of key staff, unions protect poor performing staff and this affects morale. Not run as efficiently as it should be for an organisation with such a higher turnover.
