I have been working at Southwark Council full-time

    Pros

Opportunities to progress, training schemes, central London location, pension scheme, holiday allowance, modern building and facilities, reasonable pay for local authority in central London.

    Cons

As with most local authorities, poor retention of key staff, unions protect poor performing staff and this affects morale. Not run as efficiently as it should be for an organisation with such a higher turnover.

    Pros

Good wages, good chance for progression and additional qualifications

    Cons

None that I can think of right now.

    Advice to Management

I personally think your doing brilliantly, although I don't think everyone would agree.

I worked at Southwark Council full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Good compensation and benefits
    Good work-life balance opportunities
    Well equipped modern offices

    Cons

Lack of consistency of approach towards staff and customers
    Extremely poor internal communication
Nepotism - it's all about who you know and not what you know
No probationary period for new starters

    Advice to Management

Invest in your existing talented staff to avoid brain drain
Do what you preach by creating an atmosphere of fairness, openness and transparency
    Listen to your staff
Improve your HR policies and procedures to achieve better work ethic among staff

I worked at Southwark Council full-time

    Pros

Flexible work allows you to have a good work life balance for most staff, even those that are well paid.

    Cons

The organisation, like any Local Authority, can be bureaucratic which means that projects take longer than they should

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Southwark Council full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good colleagues, modern building and the CEO while I was there, was good. Good opportunities to develop (but up until a certain level)

    Cons

Some senior managers are recycled and take their toxic nature with them to other parts of the organisation.

    Advice to Management

    Change approach to talent management

    Pros

Everyone is treated like they are equal to the manager and it's very relaxed in that sense. There is a lot of opportunity for advancement and to move around departments without being made to feel guilty. Great apprenticeship programme. Best training programme I've seen - lots of opportunity.

    Cons

As it is a council, the departments are spread out geographically so it is harder to move around or go to meetings with other members of staff in other departments.

    Advice to Management

More encouragement for people to get training and advance their skills.

I worked at Southwark Council full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Home life balance, maternity package, education, apprentice scheme.

    Cons

Old computer systems, lack of career progression

    Advice to Management

Train up existing staff to team leader / management positions. Value the knowledge of the people actually doing the job.
