I have been working at Southwestern College (California) part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very diverse population and rewarding work. Flexible schedule with set hours

    Cons

Raises are almost nonexistent, and hours are capped at 25

    Advice to Management

Find a way to hire tutors full-time

I have been working at Southwestern College (California) part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Flexible Hours
    - Decent starting pay
    - The job itself is easy

    Cons

    - Management is unorganized and sometimes inept. For example, our department magically misplaced $200k in funding, so tons of tutor jobs were cut
    - Sometimes we're micromanaged.
    - Many recent hires are unqualified.

    Advice to Management

Hire better people instead of everyone who applies

I worked at Southwestern College (California) full-time

    Pros

I enjoyed helping students accomplish their goals. It was a very satisfying job because I was able to help people.

    Cons

Not everyone is so eager to help students. Some put their own feelings and needs before others. Promotions and or transfers are based off seniority rather merit or work quality. Most people at the top are slackers and do the bare minimum which is frustrating for people that actually want to make a difference.

    Advice to Management

Management is a joke. A few have been fired for sexual harassment. Most are not even qualified to lead but they are puppets so they get the job.

I worked at Southwestern College (California) (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The work environment is generally positive.

    Cons

There is still much construction/renovation happening on campus; the noise and dust may bother some. There aren't enough tenured faculty - most are adjuncts. It is difficult to acquire even an adjunct position unless you have a referral.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on student success and quality faculty. Perhaps look into hiring full-time instructor/clerical worker hybrid positions rather than a bloat of clerical staff and adjunct instructors.

    Pros

A good place to learn office etiquette and team work.

    Cons

Project funded positions never feel stable. Union can stymie opportunities for advancement. The National City campus felt a bit unsavory at night.
