I worked at Southwestern College (California) (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The work environment is generally positive.

    Cons

There is still much construction/renovation happening on campus; the noise and dust may bother some. There aren't enough tenured faculty - most are adjuncts. It is difficult to acquire even an adjunct position unless you have a referral.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on student success and quality faculty. Perhaps look into hiring full-time instructor/clerical worker hybrid positions rather than a bloat of clerical staff and adjunct instructors.

Computer and Internet in the classroom.

    Pros

A good place to learn office etiquette and team work.

    Cons

Project funded positions never feel stable. Union can stymie opportunities for advancement. The National City campus felt a bit unsavory at night.

I have been working at Southwestern College (California) full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits. Decent pay. Tradition holidays are off. Set hours. Defined workload, tasks, and responsibilities. Sometimes you may find coworkers are are considerate and work together effectively.

    Cons

To much politics. Poor policies and procedures. Essentially no training to do your job effectively. People back bite and throw you under the bus.

    Advice to Management

Listen to classified staff sometimes. Provide more training to staff in order to increase morale.

    Pros

Gained valuable hands-on experience preparing petri plates, test tube cultures, operating an autoclave, preparing reagents from stock solutions, and taking inventory of chemical supplies.

    Cons

I found Ethidium Bromide (EtBr) and Mercuric Chloride (HgCl) while filling out an inventory. Not entirely unexpected, but both chemicals are hazardous, and neither one was stored in any kind of safety cabinet.

Also, the chemicals were obsolete, as the department was no longer using DNA Electrophoresis Gels that required EtBr, nor pH meters that required refills of HgCl.

    Advice to Management

Please dispose of hazardous chemicals promptly when no longer in use. Provide honest, weekly performance reviews. Refrain from randomly brandishing pocket knife.

I worked at Southwestern College (California) part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Leadership can be good depending on the leader, but there's definately room for improvement! Most of the employees are helpful and enjoyable to work with. There are frequent training opportunities. 'Promotions' are achieved by applying for available positions with higher pay grades.

    Cons

Politics! With so many department heads and positions of influence, there are a lot of behind the scenes agreements. I was frequently required to do 'busy work' that really didn't contribute to effective resolution of some of the projects I was responsible for.

    Advice to Management

Too many meetings!!! Too many chiefs and not enough Indians - management creates much more work for the support staff that is not actually productive.

I worked at Southwestern College (California) part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Work before class. Learn new skills. Use specialty gear even when you are not enrolled in that class. Meet new people. Did I mention LEARN NEW SKILLS like how to repair lighting stands/ fixtures, tripods, microphones.

    Cons

Early start. Average hours. 8am-12pm M-Th. I only worked here for 6 months so it is hard to tell if there is opportunity for advancement.

I worked at Southwestern College (California) part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Scheduling is somewhat flexible. Tutors can work pretty much independently and communication is efficient among supervisors, departments and teachers. Work environment is good as well.

    Cons

Getting paid monthly, one month late -if you start working in January, you will not receive your first pay check until March- unfortunately, that is true for all employees of the college. There are also not many hours per week offered and not a lot of opportunities to grow professionally within the college
