I have been working at Southwestern College (California) part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Flexible Hours
    - Decent starting pay
    - The job itself is easy

    Cons

    - Management is unorganized and sometimes inept. For example, our department magically misplaced $200k in funding, so tons of tutor jobs were cut
    - Sometimes we're micromanaged.
    - Many recent hires are unqualified.

    Advice to Management

Hire better people instead of everyone who applies

    Pros

A good place to learn office etiquette and team work.

    Cons

Project funded positions never feel stable. Union can stymie opportunities for advancement. The National City campus felt a bit unsavory at night.

I have been working at Southwestern College (California) full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits. Decent pay. Tradition holidays are off. Set hours. Defined workload, tasks, and responsibilities. Sometimes you may find coworkers are are considerate and work together effectively.

    Cons

To much politics. Poor policies and procedures. Essentially no training to do your job effectively. People back bite and throw you under the bus.

    Advice to Management

Listen to classified staff sometimes. Provide more training to staff in order to increase morale.

I worked at Southwestern College (California) part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Leadership can be good depending on the leader, but there's definately room for improvement! Most of the employees are helpful and enjoyable to work with. There are frequent training opportunities. 'Promotions' are achieved by applying for available positions with higher pay grades.

    Cons

Politics! With so many department heads and positions of influence, there are a lot of behind the scenes agreements. I was frequently required to do 'busy work' that really didn't contribute to effective resolution of some of the projects I was responsible for.

    Advice to Management

Too many meetings!!! Too many chiefs and not enough Indians - management creates much more work for the support staff that is not actually productive.

    Pros

Flexibility in scheduling and great students.

    Cons

Poor pay. Would like to see more opportunities for part time adjuncts to gain full time opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Overall cannot complain about management, but new hires often need to learn much on their own how to work within the system. Would help to provide more guidance in this aspect.

I worked at Southwestern College (California) part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The Cisco program was piloted at Southwestern College.

    Cons

The administrator of the school/division did not do enough to build the Computer Science / Information Systems program.

    Advice to Management

    See above

    Pros

Great students, beautiful campus, there are a lot of people here who really care about education. I believe it would be easy for anyone to find people of like minds here to build a program.

    Cons

Hard to make in house transitions. To go from staff to administrator or faculty can be extremely difficult if you haven't built your network well.
