I have been working at Southwestern Vermont Health Care full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Award-winning health care provider whose leadership is proactive in taking steps to navigate changes in health care in order to ensure continued success.

    Cons

As margins become thinner, more and more open positions are going unfilled and existing employees are expected to take up the slack. In my opinion, many many employees are overworked and quality is suffering (non-clinical areas - no opinion or experience with clinical working conditions).

    Advice to Management

Find ways to cut other expenses (if positions must be cut, consider cutting programs, particularly those that do not generate revenue. Also, get rid of over-paid, under-performing, unfit middle management.

I worked at Southwestern Vermont Health Care part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great patients, providers were great to work with, vacation time was generous.

    Cons

Pay was not that great. I took a job with another hospital that paid much more for the same job. Also, we basically had no manager. She was absent most of the time and had no idea what was going on in the office. Also, the system for patient check in is a time waster.

  3. "Like at many hospitals currently, due to necessary cost cuts, your job is always on the line."

I worked at Southwestern Vermont Health Care full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Hospital known for its great nursing, friendly staff.

    Cons

Cost cuts including labor, constant worry if you will lose your job. is in many companies, there tend to be employee "cliques".

    Advice to Management

Management, although has increased communication with employees, has become much more obscure. Get out and meet the employees. In a smaller hospital like SVMC, it makes a difference. More opportunity for employees to learn new jobs would be beneficial.

I worked at Southwestern Vermont Health Care full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Places high value on nursing infrastructure and services evidenced by their 3rd Magnet Nursing Award. Overall, progressive thinking by leadership evidenced by their relationship with Dartmouth-Hitchcock. Leadership is approachable. Stresses exceptional care for all patients and inclusion/engagement of employees. Beautiful location.

    Cons

Vermont Hospitals' budgets are approved by the Green Mountain Care Board whose mission is to make healthcare affordable for all Vermonters resulting in SVMC consciously pushing cost containment while maintaining or improving patient quality - a challenging intersection. Discussion of costs more prevalent than discussions of quality. Old inpatient facility. Everyone appears to have a full work plate.

    Advice to Management

Integrate physician leadership in strategic conversations. Keep the progressive thinking, even if it hurts - new problems are a sign of progress [repeating old problems are a sign of stagnation].

I worked at Southwestern Vermont Health Care full-time

    Pros

SVHC has a wonderful group of physicians, dedicated staff, and a mostly fun environment, they do great patient care

    Cons

SVHC has serious senior management challenges and allows poor senior managers to ride roughshod over their employees, blame others and make life miserable.

    Advice to Management

focus on the performance of the senior management team. Many of them are horrible. Work on developing opportunities for staff to succeed. stop hiring countless consultants

I have been working at Southwestern Vermont Health Care (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great Team Atmosphere. Love my coworkers. could not ask for better. I wish they would stop leaving but I know there is no way to stop them.

    Cons

Management has no clue what it takes to care for patients. Constantly cutting resources, cutting staffing, requiring you to take on additional responsibilities. When applying for Magnet recognition staffing was great so they know what staffing needs are when important people are looking.

    Advice to Management

Stop focusing on cost so much. You are running your staff into the dirt. People are looking to leave because of it. Soon you will have a bunch of inexperienced staff and patients are going to have adverse outcomes because of it.
