Pros
I loved working here at Sovos.
Cons
There can be unrealistic sales quotas.
Continue readingThank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I am so pleased to hear you loved working here. I do too! I understand your feedback about our sales quotas; we set high expectations for our sales teams. We know we are selling something special. Global tax requirements are rapidly changing, and businesses have to update their processes down to the transactional level in order to not only comply, but to thrive. In short, companies need what we sell – and our sales team is uniquely positioned to take advantage of this. We set our quotas accordingly. It’s important for us to set aggressive, and realistic quotas for every last quota carrying team member to ensure our employees are set up for success. Every year we re-analyze the market opportunity in front of us and establish annual quotas accordingly. In addition, sales team members are supported by leadership, ongoing sales training initiatives, sales operations teams, marketing leads, and so many other resources across the business. Quota carriers have uncapped commission, so the opportunity is there for our sales team to take advantage. Lastly, you are completely right about work/life balance. That is why we have a flexible time off program in the US and have moved to a global flexible work model. I thank you for the time that you spent here. We cheered your successes while you were here, and we will continue to do so as you grow your career elsewhere.

Excellent team and leadership- they would give care packages during tax time and have meetings/ check ins for the team.
Cons
Ridiculous hours during tax time. I made it one tax season with 16 customer companies that I covered. If it hadn't been work from home the hours would have been impossible. I was part of a buy out from another software company (that's how SOVOS grows/ by buying out other companies), and so the transition from my former employer to SOVOS was a bit traumatic. I was transitioned from an sales support role to a tax compliance role and it was not for me.

Thank you for taking the time to write this review. We are so pleased to see your satisfaction with the Compliance Services team and leadership. We take a lot of pride in knowing our support to the team creates a collaborative and inclusive environment. I am sorry to hear you did not have the best experience with our busy season. The annual nature of the tax work this team supports can be stressful, especially when you are going through a transition into a new environment at the same time. As you mentioned, we do what we can to lighten the burden by allowing flexible work arrangements and other support during the busy season. It really is an all hands on deck approach. We also offer flexible time off benefits to ensure that our teams can have the break they very much deserve after tax season is over. Every year we also have focused efforts to continue to improve the impact of the heavy workload on our operations teams during tax season. Although this role did not fit your interests, we appreciate your valiant efforts to our customers to ensure a positive experience for them. Thank you again for the time you have spent with us. We wish you the best of luck in the future!

Unlimited PTO and remote schedule
Cons
Leadership is awful. Direction of business is not great. Pay is awful. Solutions are awful and have no market share making the OTE completely unrealistic.

Pros
The benefits are decent and you'll find some really great people here, but that is just about it. Granted some departments are better than others.
Cons
Management is a joke. People who advocate for better processes get fired or ignored. They'd instead promote people to management who have a poor attitude, gossip to teams, are so green and don't have enough knowledge of the job, and pass off tasks. Turnover is insane because the training and management are so lacking, and the workload is completely unmanageable, so no one wants to stay here long term - so expect to have several managers in your time here even if it's as short as a year. The amount of stress in TRR specifically you will NOT be compensated for. You're going to work an average of 60-70 hour weeks in a season, and then be passed up for bonuses & promotions, repeatedly. Favorites get recognized, and the rest end up getting pushed out and either transfer or quit. And forget seeing even a little bit of diversity here, they might say they strive for diversity with the added DEI team, but it's not true. In the years I've been here I've rarely seen anyone hired who isn't white and totally conventional.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. I agree, great people work at Sovos. I consider myself fortunate to work alongside so many talented, engaged people. I am sorry to hear that you have had a negative experience with some managers. Career development is incredibly important to our organization and, in managed services specifically, having managers who have done the work themselves and understand the challenges that their frontline employees face is a tremendous asset. I am also sorry to hear you feel you were passed over for bonuses and promotions. In Managed Services, there are multiple opportunities over the course of a year for our employees to receive both merit increases, bonuses, and promotions to acknowledge the work that goes into our busy tax season. I can also assure you that we have never fired anyone for advocating for better processes. To the contrary, I encourage all our employees to proactively advocate for change where they see opportunity for improvement. Our commitment to process improvement is what led us to hiring our first ever Global Leader in Managed Services, who spent time in our Minneapolis office recently listening to the team's feedback and concerns. Finally, to address your comments about diversity, we are still early in our journey (but nearly 2 years since we purposefully chose this path). We have made great strides with our DEI team but agree more work to be done. We know that having a diverse group of employees benefits all our employees, and I am committed to continuing to work with our leaders to impact positive change there. I wish you luck in your future endeavors, and thanks again for the feedback.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. I am so glad to hear that you enjoy your job and that your feel supported by your team and management. That is so important. I appreciate your concerns about pay and understand how important that is. We evaluate our compensation targets regularly to ensure that they are competitive in the market as well as provide yearly performance reviews to evaluate individual performance. We also have a host of career development opportunities, which can be a great way to grow your career right here at Sovos. HR is a great starting point, but I am also happy to meet 1:1 and discuss. My door is always open.

I get along with pretty much all my coworkers, not a single bad manager in my department, this past year the high management of our division really worked to improve our tools and resources (thank you)
Cons
mediocre pay, unforgivably bad knowledge transfer (knock-on from lousy employee retention), work/life balance improving but still bad overall, increasingly outsourced jobs (people get tired of working too much for too little pay), training is improving but long overdue for that

Thank you so much for your feedback. I am pleased, but not surprised, that you enjoy the people you work with. One of the things that I think is so wonderful about the leadership of our Managed Services teams is that so many of the them were promoted into those roles from front-line roles themselves. They understand the challenges better than anyone, and are so well equipped to support their teams. It sounds like you are benefiting from that with the improvements to the tools and the resources that you have seen. I am also happy to see that there are other areas where you can see improvement, including training. I understand your frustrations around employee retention and how that impacts knowledge transfer. Sovos is certainly not alone in this phenomenon. Turnover and job change across the globe has been unprecedented in recent history. Although losing valued members of a team is always disappointing, it does bring with it the opportunity to infuse new and fresh ideas into the organization. The fact that this was discussed with the entire organization was certainly not intended to imply that new employees have better or more impactful ideas than long tenured employees, and I am very sorry that you were left feeling that way. If you or members of your team feel like your ideas are going unheard, please feel free to bring them to me directly. My door is always open and I am more than happy to listen. I am happy to note that our turnover of late has been incredibly low and we look forward to it continuing to be that way. I want to thank you, again, for your feedback and for the many years that you have spent here. We are lucky to have you.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. Our comprehensive benefits package allows our employees to enjoy life both inside and outside of work, and it is great to hear that you found them to be favorable! We also take pride in the fact that we hire for talent FIRST. It allows us the opportunity to hire talented, motivated individuals who we know may start out in entry level roles but have the skills to move up within the organization quickly. There are so many opportunities that we provide to our employees through Leadership Development programs, Recognition programs, Mentor programs, and more. But, at the end of the day, we understand that compensation is very important to our employees. And it is important to us! I take issue with the idea that we have no desire to properly pay and retain our top talent. Our employees are the most important part of Sovos and we are constantly evaluating our compensation models and various ways to impact and improve employee retention. In fact, this past year we have had some of the lowest turnover we have ever seen. I wish that you would have raised your concerns while you were here so that we could explain some of what we are doing to impact these topics. Thanks again for your feedback, and wish you the best of luck. - Laura Handler

Pros
The benefits package is pretty good and really enjoyed the C-suite trying to foster a positive culture.
Cons
Unfortunately, I only stuck around for about a year. Sure, the pay wasn't all that great, the workload is just plain ridiculous, outrageous rate of turnover but what ultimately drove me away from Sovos is my reporting manager. This person had no idea on how to lead a team and just destroyed the Agile process into a ultra micro-management session. I honestly felt this person was not qualified for this role and just used me as a scapegoat to shield themselves from certain tasks. For a large company, my reporting manager made me feel alone and isolated the majority of my time at Sovos. He/She would chant his/her open door policy but I always felt ridiculed during our 1-on-1's and in front of my colleagues during our team calls. Sometimes I would be given direction from the reporting manager and then that same person would turn around to claim they never instructed me to do so. I couldn't decipher if my reporting manager was just trying to make it unpleasant for me, deliberately gaslighting and/or just unfit for the role. This happened to me on several occasions which just lead me to look for another opportunity elsewhere.

Thank you for your well thought out feedback. I am glad that that you were able to see how important a positive culture is to us here. If you ever attended any of our All Hands meetings, or have heard our CEO Andy talk on the subject, you will know that having an inclusive environment where our teams can safely bring their whole selves to work is of the utmost importance to us and that that belief really does come from the very top down. Which is why reading about your experience with your direct manager is so challenging. We never want anyone to feel alone or isolated during their time here. We know how critical it is to have supportive and effective managers, both for the individuals that report into them and for the success of the company as a whole. Our managers should (of course) be good at their jobs but, more importantly, serve as mentors and coaches to the employees that interact with them. It is because of this that we have implemented programs like our manager bootcamps for newly hired and newly promoted leaders, to give them the tools that they need to be successful leaders. I am sorry that you did not know the options for providing feedback and where to go to be heard. We always want employees to have a place where they can share feedback in a comfortable way. We encourage employees to talk to HR or their Senior Leader in cases similar to yours, and for those who may not feel comfortable doing that, we do have ways of reporting anonymously as well. Nobody at Sovos should ever fear retaliation for speaking out about something that they feel is unfair. I am sorry that you had the experience that you did. If you still want to reach out, I would be more than happy to connect. I wish you the best of luck as you move forward in your career.
