I have been working at Space Systems/Loral full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great, talented, dedicated people. Elevated sense of purpose.

    Cons

Long term employees often don't think outside the box and loose sight of roles within the business. This is especially true of service organizations. Sense of territorial and adversarial behaviors.
Some business units don't realize or are unwilling to engage with internal SME's before making critical business decisions. Accountability is an issue with some BU's

    Advice to Management

Continue to flatten the organization and drive decision making downward. Current VP's and above to get out of tactical decision making and undermining of middle management.

"Much better options in bay area and in rest of the aerospace industry"

I worked at Space Systems/Loral full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The company does work on some very cool products. You are building satellites that go into space. Also with recent NASA contract wins there are some cool partners you get to work with.

You also get to work with some people are very smart individuals (depends heavily on the group) and work life balance is pretty good as well, you can get 9/80 weeks if you want.

    Cons

    Where to begin:

-Compensation: I suppose it's due to the nature of the industry and SSL being in one of the most expensive areas of the country, but it is atrocious. Even compared to other old time aerospace companies, the pay and the bonuses are very bad.

-Work culture: Many older employees who do not contribute much to the company and terrible communications between different groups. There are definitely few smart, motivated, action-oriented individuals in each group but they are far and few in between. Culture is overall very resistant to change (they are trying to change that, but you can only do so much) and people do not want to do things differently.

-Management: Everybody complains about the management at every company, but boy it's bad here. Office politics + old thinking + lack of resources (not really management's fault, company isn't making money) + many layered bureaucracy makes management downright awful. And this is a significant improvement after SSL made big changes to its management/org structure the past few years, which should tell you just how bad it is. And very little chance of career advancement beyond office grunt, as many old guards are inline gunning for next management roles. Of course lay-offs affect the lower management significantly as well.

-Industry: Most important factor if you are thinking about working for SSL. Due to terrestrial competition and other new innovative aerospace giants like SpaceX and OneWeb, GEO sat industry is shrinking rapidly. Because of this the company went through multiple layoffs in the last 2 years and will likely cut more in the near future (as far as I know hasn't won a contract in 2017 after 2 bad years in 2015 and 2016). One small bright spot is the NASA contracts and the growing smallsat market, but it's nowhere near enough to make up for losses in the GEO market that is SSL's bread and butter. In my honest opinion the company doesn't have more than 5-10 years left.

-Other factors/perks: Pretty much none. The office interiors look atrociously bad with bland grey carpet and walls, they've made some effort to spruce up the place but old buildings and cube seating dominate still. Health care/401k etc are on par with other aerospace companies (average in bay area). Cafeteria is pretty bad, they finally started providing half-decent coffee but before they just had few moldy snack rooms with vending machines.

    Advice to Management

It's a sinking ship/losing battle, to be honest. Either make a big bet to get in the satellite service business or something like that, or fade away and become the next victim to new technology and automation.
