I worked at Space Systems/Loral full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I had the pleasure of meeting and working with some great people

    Cons

Poor management, lack of direction. Senior people in roles managing huge numbers of people.... and apparently just do not like people in general.
Manufacturing people are great, but ultimately get short changed on timing for deadlines as nothing prior to final satelite build is done on time. Final assembly has 2 months to do 6 months worth of work (routinely). The most predictable condition is the simple unpredicatability.

    Advice to Management

Management cannot see the big picture, nothing beyond next quarter. All solutions are a 'quick fix' and more of a band aide than a corrective action.

I have been working at Space Systems/Loral part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There are some nice people here, very diverse company. Flexible schedule at times. Great interesting work. Easy freeway access and parking.

    Cons

No teamwork. The temporary work environment leads to backstabbing to make others look bad. No room for advancement as a temporary employee.

    Advice to Management

I would keep people with the ability to work well with others, not by how much they get paid. Concentrate on team building, as well as cost cutting.

    Advice to Management

stop rewarding those who say what you want to hear and start recognizing those who work hard

I have been working at Space Systems/Loral full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Redundant satellites, backed by a powerful company, sustainable to a certain extent. There is a lot of intelligent and potentially motivated people.

    Cons

Archaic culture in manufacturing, promoting, innovating, hiring. We are running on a business system that is behing the times.

    Advice to Management

Know your people and what they contribute to the company. Cultivate a culture of integrity.

I have been working at Space Systems/Loral full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Aerospace is an exciting industry. There are over 30 different engineering fields within the company. Fairly easy to move around and cross train.

    Cons

Too much politics and red tape. Slow to change. Slow to improve. Can not compete with small agile new space type companies.

    Advice to Management

Stop empire building and work to retain your workforce.

I have been working at Space Systems/Loral full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Builds excellent S/C who's quality and technology are sought internationally. First commercial three axis body stabilized spacecraft after producing numerous spin stabilized weather and communications s/c.

    Cons

Company has difficulty making profit against other competitors involved in military s/c endeavors who are able to spread the development costs across more programs. European competitors are subsidized by their government agencies. US government policy and export regulations are killing the US spacecraft industry. Company is run more by HR than the management. Uncompensated overtime hours are are a job requirement and refusal to work them considered a voluntary resignation from one's position.

    Advice to Management

Reduce number of mid to upper level managers. Consider relocating out of the Silicon Valley where housing and living cost preclude hiring and keeping new younger engineers. Don't use automotive consultants to recommend how to improve cost effectivity and throughput in construction of S/C.

I have been working at Space Systems/Loral full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Get to see satellites every day. If you have a good manager, it's a great place to work. Get to pick the best technology for the job.

    Cons

Difficult to procure items. Difficult to get increases in compensation. Does not keep up with Bay Area market. Struggles between groups preventing work from getting done. Not enough staff.

    Pros

Interesting technology and the opportunity to contribute to something that has a profound affect on peoples lives. Lots of good people trying their hardest to get things done right and on time.

    Cons

Things are very cliquish. If your not one of the "in" group your voice doesn't tend to be heard.
Upper management tends to put on blinders when it comes to what's actually happening on the production floor.

    Advice to Management

Stop being so full of yourself. Take time to listen to the opinion of others before making foolish decisions that destroy the things that are already working well.
