I worked at SpaceX full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The biggest 'Pro' about SpaceX is its overall mission and the goals it is working towards. You will work with some very dedicated people on projects that most will think are impossible, and continue to dig deep and find what you and your team are capable of. It also looks great on a resume, and for those who care what others think, it sounds great to the outside world when you tell them that you work here.

    Cons

SpaceX will work you into the ground for little to no reward. The company claims to be merit based, which is a joke. Over the last few years, it has moved from a company that strived to make the impossible happen, with dedicated people that all pulled their weight, to teams of looters who are more SpaceX fanboys than actual boots on the ground, make it happen type people.

You will spend months of your life on the road with zero appreciation or compensation, other than threats to keep your job. Also, anticipate a very hostile work environment, with management continuously looking for a scape goat to pin issues on. Be prepared to be belittled and threatened to keep your mouth shut on issues as well. My favorite quote I got from management on a very large project during reviews was "Well upper management doesn't know you were the one who made this project come to fruition and did all the work, thats why you didn't anything for it"

If you are not part of the "boys club", do not anticipate a promotion or bonuses of any sort (no matter how many fires you put out).

Do not anticipate a career path; it does not exist here. Managements idea of a career path is "Here, have another project to keep you busy"

    Advice to Management

Management needs to be honest with Elon and Gwynne. They have no clue about what is actually happening on the ground. Stop lying to them about timelines and money. The 100hr weeks need to stop!

Don't promote people for the sake of promoting them because "its good for the company". Compensate and recognize those who actually perform and do the work.

Stop placating to managers and folks who make a larger deal out of issues that don't matter as a way to hide their incompetence.

Pay attention to who is actually making it happen - it's not always who sends the first email!

I have been working at SpaceX full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I couldn't think of a more motivational or satisfying company to work for. Every day is a challenge and I get to work next to some of the smartest people in the world. Building a rocket, watching it launch and then reflying it again is just the beginning!

    Cons

The long hours and work/life balance is difficult...but this is mostly self driven, not a requirement by management.

There are always folks trying to move up the ladder and sometimes they do it at the expense of others.

    Advice to Management

My management team is top notch. We have clear direction and know what needs to be done to get there. The only advice I would suggest is to listen to the team and really invest in each person on a 1:1 basis.

    Pros

Incredible talent and significant work. The SpaceX brand is a powerful one (#1 in the world on Hired’s Global Brand Health report), and the stuff you get to see here will blow your mind. Every day.

People here are friendly, super smart, and dedicated to SpaceX’s mission of enabling space exploration and human life on Mars.

Food here is delicious and employees get great discounts

    Cons

no 401k matching but that’s really it, on the whole this work environment is unlike any other so there are few cons

    Advice to Management

employee benefits are getting better but could still use additional work (e.g. free food, 401k matching, etc)

    Pros

Had a great time at SpaceX. Amazing learning opportunity with a great degree of autonomy and independence.

    Cons

Above and beyond effort is standard here. Definitely takes some getting used to. The pay is very sub-par compared to other high level engineering positions and definitely considering the hours people put in.

    Advice to Management

Work on early on integration of both interns and fulltimers into their teams. The onboarding process both culturally and

I worked at SpaceX full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great health, dental and vision benefits. Fifteen paid vacation days are accrued over a year.

    Cons

Long hours (10-12 hours per day) and occasional weekends, many times you won't know if you're working a Saturday until the Friday before. If you don't work at the main building in Hawthorne but work close by at a satellite building, many of the free perks (coffee bar w/ baristas, yogurt stands, multiple food options) don't apply to you. Pay is below industry average but I personally think employees get caught up with the sense that they work for SpaceX and a "cool" company/talking point so they decide to stay.

    Advice to Management

The communication from leadership to subordinate employees is awful. There is a way to effectively communicate to employees where you will get the most of out them, being demeaning and rude isn't the way.
