I have been working at Spacelabs Healthcare full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Quality people that are a joy to work with. Interesting challenges. And more than enough opportunities to make improvements. If you thrive on solving production challenges, then it is that engineer's dream opportunity.

    Cons

The overhead in all the intricate processes and procedures to keep the FDA happy is a significant drag on innovation.
Pay is average to below average for the Puget Sound region.

    Advice to Management

Focus on real innovation in the core product line. Trying to be all things to all people does not produce real wins long term. Revenue is great, but profitability is even better.

I have been working at Spacelabs Healthcare full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Reasonable commute, nice view. Middle management does what they can to make life good, but upper management sometimes prevents good ideas from taking root.

    Cons

Lots of uncertainty. New President and other upper-level management. Poor performance this past year. Little innovation, and always putting out fires. Attrition is high, and lots of the tribal knowledge is lost forever. Slightly lower than average pay in an above average cost city.

    Advice to Management

Reduce attrition. You'll probably have to pay better to do this because despite what the company wants to believe, most people work for a paycheck, not because they feel good about the product. Cut your losses on the products that aren't working out and focus on the future. Stop with the date driven releases, and actually release based on the quality. Dont' ask product management for a date, because they'll make something up (this has happened several times in the past two years). Come ask the engineers on the project what their timeline looks like.

    Pros

Co-workers are amazing people, awesome team effort all of the time.
It's up to staff at corporate to suggest and make changes which is great.

    Cons

If anyone quits or loses their job, their workload is absorbed by others and no replacement is made available. If any new management is hired old processed are looped into history which has not been proven to be beneficial. What's the saying, "history repeats itself".

    Advice to Management

Recognize and reward the staff by promoting from within. Notice the capabilities of who is on your team by reading their resumes on file, especially is you are a new manager and have no idea what your team is capable of. After all, we all work for the same company and want it to succeed.

I have been working at Spacelabs Healthcare full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

NONE - this operation continues to amaze anyone that the exists there for many reasons all not good. The know how to spend money and not make money

    Cons

Worse conditions exist and will continue to occur, not a happy place to work. Upper management is totality at fault with the dictatorial decisions. No communication is the normal operation and this is a place where the workers have to hide to survive and agree to all orders without question. The supply chain should not be making any decisions as they are the problem. Lower costs do not sell the inferior products.

    Advice to Management

With firing, not resignation of the president now more removal of the upper management will hopefully come. The CEO of OSI needs to remove all the deadmeat at the top. The division of Spacelabs will hit bottom soon. Continued poor decisions to save money by closing operations does not make money. No one cares what was done in the past - time to move forward before it is too late.

I have been working at Spacelabs Healthcare full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people to work with and with so much regulatory push, there have been many improvements to processes. Hopefully, this will increase product quality.

    Cons

There is a huge lack of resources in certain departments. People are expected to continue to do their normal day to day work while fixing processes that have been identified by regulators. The workload is unbearable sometimes. Work/life balance does not exist. Employees' hard work is rarely recognized or appreciated.

    Advice to Management

Your employees are your main asset no matter how low on the totem pole. Appreciate them, compensate them appropriately for the work they do, and reward them for their hard work. People will continue to leave to find better benefits.

I have been working at Spacelabs Healthcare full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The majority of people at Spacelabs are a pleasure to work with. Office location is in a beautiful part of the Puget Sound area. If you like to contribute to a company that is improving and re-inventing itself, then you'd love working here.

    Cons

If you don't like challenges and obstacles, but want a steady job that never changes, then this is probably not a good job option for you. (at least not in operations or R&D departments) Average pay is probably below market value for most jobs. (Software excluded perhaps.)

    Advice to Management

Get to know the people two or three levels below you early in their tenure, and they will be much more likely to stick around longer. Always remember that retraining a new employee is twice as expensive as holding on to the best talent that you already have. And senior management has made some very good decisions of late, so they deserve some praise for that.

    Pros

Multicultural environment good with good dedicated people. Activities, sports and gathering to promote relationships and teamwork. Focus on developing technologies and products for patients. Good innovative vision for the future.

    Cons

Challenges with improving legacy process and practices. many new products introduced over the past few years adding to the bolus of effort required. Communication are inadequate at times.

    Advice to Management

Proactive communication needed for each group. HR need to proactively understand the concerns of employees especially welfare and communicate frequently and clearly.
