I have been working at Special Devices full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

the company and people you work with are always very friendly and are willing to help you further your career there by learning as much as possible. this is definitely a great job to get some manufacturing experience because you don't need any prior experience to get a position here.

    Cons

pay isn't that great for the time and materials you work with and sometimes management has a hard time communicating to its operators in general about everything. you work 10 hours a day for about 5-6 days a week all year round.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to work on communication to their operators a little better and pay wages for the materials we work with.

I worked at Special Devices full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent pay, enough to get by for a while, friendly people to work with, overtime is great, good starting job

    Cons

Managment is failing, no room for growth, attendance policy is horrible, payrate is way under what they should be for automotive manufacturing

    Advice to Management

Open up room for growth and actually pay employees what they are worth. You make 90k salary but wont pay 12/hr...hmm theres a problem with that

    Pros

    -Company is currently experiencing growth.
-It's very difficult to be terminated for poor performance.
    -Pay is competitive.
-If you love work, the overtime is never ending.

    Cons

-A lot of the old timers are on cruise control, puts pressure on new hires.
-Reviews are mostly locked in at a score of "3".
-If you score too high, HR will require a high score in any one category be knocked down. (Special exemptions apply!)
-Career growth is predetermined at time of hire.

    Advice to Management

-Learn how to determine who the star performers are and reward them.
-Stop promoting bad habits exhibited by some employees as behaviors and attitudes to be followed. (Really bizarre)

I worked at Special Devices full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Decent managment with good over time hours every week, mandatory 10 hours Friday almost every week. Lots of older co-workers willing to teach new cowokers more efficient methods. Annual bonus and pay raise.

    Cons

No room for advancement, long hours with working weekends usually, benfits expensive. Same work every day, it never changes unless you switch departments.

I have been working at Special Devices full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A lot of things going on. One of the few bright spots for Manufacturing in the Phoenix area. Lots of opportunity to get in on something new. Very smart dedicated people that understand the industry.

    Cons

In a couple of years, I wonder what will happen when things level out. Heath benefits really suck. Make sure you get extra money coming in to compensate for this.

    Advice to Management

    Stay tough and stay American!

I have been working at Special Devices (More than a year)

    Pros

    It's a job. Paychecks cash.

    Cons

60 hrs a week (regardless of what your told) management acts like they are the only company in the state that's hiring. They try to motivate with threats. low pay, expensive benefits.

    Advice to Management

Why do you think when you hire 25 people by the end of the week you have 5 left?

    Pros

They lie. It's not 4-10hr. shifts it's 6-10hr. shifts. You work everyday. If you like the money, then this is the place for you.

    Cons

Ignorant and immoral management. No fairness and if you have a safety incident, you're FIRED!

    Advice to Management

All step down and let professionals run the company.

I worked at Special Devices (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Very high insurance rates, Lots and lots of over time 60 to 70hrs a week if you like no life and a family. 10 an hour to start.

    Cons

Not very caring of employees needs life or issues. Can not miss more than 4 days of work if you do in a year you get fired. You have to be a good liar to work there and brown nosier which gets you no where.

    Advice to Management

Treat employee better and when they have an issue solve it. And quit lying about stuff that does not happen

    Pros

Absolutely amazing people to work for. Knowledgeable group of engineers and machinist who were mostly very helpful. I learned so much there and Technicians were a pleasure to work with.

    Cons

Downside is lack of chain of command. Some people were cut throat. Instead of talking things out and resolving any issues on hand, they will go to HR on you. This is the only company I have worked out so far were I felt like HR was there just to try and terminate you without really hearing your side. Very black and white.

    Advice to Management

Please have training programs in place about ethics. Company culture needs to be more homogenous to set good example for future employees. Ethics are skewed.
