    I worked at Speck full-time

    Pros

It is an easy-going company, very casual. For the most part most of the employees work hard except for managers.

    Cons

Speck management is the worst. First of all, there are too many of them. About 40% of the corporate employees are managers and above. In some cases, there are 2 managers in one department to oversee about 4 employees. That is 1 manager for every 2 employees. To but this in perspective large corporation’s managers to employees’ ratio is about 8%. When I was in business school everything I learned not to do as a manager, Speck does it. Speck’s management style are ideal case studies of what not to do for business schools. Managers always complain about poor employee performance but they never do anything about it because they don’t hold anyone accountable.

    Advice to Management

    Hold employees’ accountable especially management.

    Pros

Specks management team is extremely seasoned and supportive. The culture f Speck is supportive and driven with the focus that with support all boats rise.

    Cons

The change of culture after the acquisition has made it difficult to grow. Our parent company does not have the mechanisms from its systems to personal needed to support the ever changing world of cases for phones, tablets and MACBOOKS.

    Advice to Management

Support your strong employees with change and the bodies needed to continue our growth

    Pros

Speck is a very unique company to work at.
    - Highly collaborative
    - Very quick paced, successive development and launch cycles - great to keep you on your toes and keep things interesting
    - Company values transparency and open/honest communication from the top down.
    - Pride of product, everything Speck sells is thought through.
    - The company embraces change and is open to improvements, new ideas, etc
    - Really great, smart and kind people in every department
    - Speck has grown over the years, but it still has plenty of upside opportunity
    - The list goes on and would recommend if there is an open position apply to check it out yourself

    Cons

    Not to many to list:
    - Very quick paced, successive development and launch cycle, everyone needs to carry their weight,
    - Each department is run very lean with no room for slackers, so not a good place if you're looking to coast.
    - Like any company, work/life balance can get skewed during peak season (it's part of the nature of the biz).

    Advice to Management

Keep the communication going and level of transparency high. It goes a very long way to helping everyone feel included, up to date, aligned and committed.

I have been working at Speck full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Speck is a fantastic place to work. Most days I am wake up excited to come to come in, it helps being surrounded by incredibly intelligent, tenacious and creative people. It is a constant source of inspiration. Watching your colleagues dedicate so much of themselves pushes me to do better. Due to the nature of the business it teaches you to be quick on your feet and able to react in the moment, there is little down time but if you thrive in a fast paced environment then its a an excellent place to be

    Cons

Every office has its frustrations, communications sometimes breaks down, deadlines get tight but I can truthfully say these are far less of an issue at Speck then I have experienced elsewhere

    I worked at Speck full-time

    Pros

-Really, no pros. I do not recommend applying to jobs here.
-Maybe Samsonite will turn it around.

    Cons

-I couldn't wait to get out of here. The whole place is a joke, but especially the product development team.
-There are some real bad characters on the PD team. No cohesion. There's no semblance of a team. It's just a bunch of misfits together in a small, low ceiling office that's made for rats, not people.
-I've worked with some CAD experts. No one in PD knows much about Pro Engineer. Granted, Specks products are stupidly simple, so I guess it's not that big of a deal. But the level of knowledge is low. There's also no legitimate PLM system in place. Lot's of chaos and dysfunction with file/rev management and document control.
-The office is horrible. It's in a building in the middle of nowhere (McDonalds is the closest food option!), the building is deserted, and the office itself reminds me of a structure that cats play on. A bunch of compartments connected to one another. It's embarrassing.
-The products are ill-conceived. There's no real process in design, anlysis, or testing. There's no innovation or blue sky thinking. We wait until companies launch electronics, we make quick/cheap cases for them, and then we go into production. Nothing we do is unique or challenging.
-There is no true engineering involved unless you're in materials or manufacturing. There is nothing mechanical about these products, so if you're a mechanical engineer you will be wasted and disappointed.
-And worst of all, Speck still thinks it's a great place to work. Speckian culture! The place has no culture. It's an office. People work. People go home. The picture that HR will try to paint is horribly wrong and misleading.

    Advice to Management

Give people better tools to succeed. Start doing something else. You will never keep talented engineers around if you're always chasing the next plastic case. Move offices, create a culture, and create a process for developing products. GL
