I have been working at Spectra Energy full-time

    Pros

    +Stable job with great benefits
    +Not competitive environment
    +Coworkers are nice and helpful
+Lots of people with very many years of experience

    Cons

    -Very hierarchical
-Promotions are experience-based rather than competency-based
    -Risk averse company and people

    Advice to Management

Spectra is stuck in the 'old way of doing things.' This is most likely because of the ease and experience with traditional methods, and the comfort-level with 'how things have always been done.'

Experience goes a long way, but natural gas transmission is not rocket science. While it's important to have a solid workforce with experience, encouraging innovation is essential to attract and retain talent.

Why wait 6 years if I only need 1.5? Spectra's (assumed) answer: "Because it's always been done that way."

    Advice to Management

I have been working at Spectra Energy (Less than a year)

    Pros

Pay is better than most companies

    Cons

Too many directors trying to change the company into BP, too many politics, and too many inconsistencies.

    Advice to Management

Work on one issue, fix it, then move on to the next. Get to know your contractors as they are 60% of the company's staff. Train, train, train. The is not a competition to see who can swim the farthest without a life jacket.

Upper management wants to improve project management.

I worked at Spectra Energy (Less than a year)

    Pros

Company is good, employees are helpful.

    Cons

Some employees need more training in communication. More structure in remodeling in the building. Building is very old and inspectors need to check for Asbestos. Just saying in any old building, there needs to be some kind of upgrade (remolding) for safety issues.

    Advice to Management

Management needs more training in Professionalism, Ethics, Honesty with employees.

PSCM is new and it has no direction. There are no real opportunities for advancement. Most people in PSCM talks about leaving the company as soon as an opportunity arrives.

I have been working at Spectra Energy as a contractor (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great for starting out and gaining experience, especially for those just graduating from college or seeking a change of career.

    Cons

    Highly political
Anyone who is non republican or tea party need not apply
If your not religious you will stick out like a sore thumb
Expect rules/regulations to be applied only if its in managements favor
Do not use the supposedly anonymous ethics line as they actively try to find out who called, emailed etc
Type B personalities are very unwelcomed in the environment
Passive bullying is very much present

    Advice to Management

Follow the rules behind closed doors as well as when they're open.
