    Pros

Spectra provides one of the best benefits package in the industry - add to that the 9/80 work schedule OR 1 day/week telecommuting option is just great.

    Cons

Spectra's middle management is aging and are happy maintaining status quo till they retire - you'll do good at this company if you just follow your supervisor without questioning why and how things are being done.

    Advice to Management

Bring more young blood into middle management - provide a clear career path for individuals who show promise and recognize them for their contributions.

I have been working at Spectra Energy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

We work here to live and the company supports that concept
    Great place to get experience

    Cons

Eval processis "rigged". Meaning the 1 to 5 scale is really a 1 to 4. So basically here at Spectra you will always be an average employee.
Office politics - really bad here.
Salary is on the low side

    Advice to Management

    Evaluations shuld be honest.
Senior Management seems to know where they are taking the company
Unable to advance - my fear is that I will me stuck in this postion until I get a better offer

I worked at Spectra Energy full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Spectra is an established big company with big company benefits. A leader in natural gas storage and a major player in natural gas transportation.

    Cons

Spectra is a big company. Some of the internal groups tend to try to act like a small company when in fact the big company layers of bureaucracy and politics exist and are in full effect.

I have been working at Spectra Energy as a contractor

    Pros

Very nice people, excellent working conditions, great flexibility, job security, true to the "employer of choice" values.

    Cons

Extremely controlled communication environment which stifle creativity. Very narrow job assignments that do not allow for growth. Reaching outside the job scope is more or less "punished" instead of discussed.

    Advice to Management

There's a great book called "leadership and self deception". Most of the folks are "in the box" and need coaching/help.

  7. "Good company if you are not a contractor or in IT department"

Former Employee - Information Technology in Houston, TX

    Pros

Good work atmosphere. Nice people to work with. Walking distance from galleria.

    Cons

If you work in the IT department get ready to stay as a contractor. Department will not hire you as a perm employee even if you prove yourself. Raises are minimal.

    Advice to Management

Hire contractors that are worth keeping and prove themselves worthy. Give more raises to contractors.

I worked at Spectra Energy full-time

    Pros

Gained lots of experience with SAP, creating pivot tables, forecasting budgets of 200 projects and over 250 million in costs.

    Cons

Heavy work load and company groups financial analyst with administation such as secretaries and pays accordingly.

    Advice to Management

Financial analysts aren't secretaries. You should classify them as does the rest of the industry.

I worked at Spectra Energy as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great company, salary, and benefits for full-time regular employees

    Cons

No respect whatsoever for contract employees

    Advice to Management

Several supervisors could use sensitivity training, as well as being made aware of when they are creating a hostile work environment. I heard "You're just a contractor" much too often.
