I have been working at Spectra Energy full-time

    Pros

    +Stable job with great benefits
    +Not competitive environment
    +Coworkers are nice and helpful
+Lots of people with very many years of experience

    Cons

    -Very hierarchical
-Promotions are experience-based rather than competency-based
    -Risk averse company and people

    Advice to Management

Spectra is stuck in the 'old way of doing things.' This is most likely because of the ease and experience with traditional methods, and the comfort-level with 'how things have always been done.'

Experience goes a long way, but natural gas transmission is not rocket science. While it's important to have a solid workforce with experience, encouraging innovation is essential to attract and retain talent.

Why wait 6 years if I only need 1.5? Spectra's (assumed) answer: "Because it's always been done that way."

I have been working at Spectra Energy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great work environment, excellent work and life balance. People are very friendly here and it runs like a family. Management cares what you say and it has open door policy. HR is trustworthy and it rarely can be seen in other company. 9/80 schedule is wonderful aspect to have to not only give employees and family flexibility but also save the commute and gas from environmental prospective. Employee loyalty and moral is high under current Spectra culture.wonderful aspect to have to not only give employees and family flexbility but

    Cons

Not too much cons under current Spectra environment and culture. Have huge concerns about Enbridge US, especially saw reviews written by Enbridge employees and hearings about Enbridge culture. Non-existing 9/80 schedule at Enbridge is very big disappointment, hope Enbridge management could consider and respect the current Spectra culture and 9/80 schedule

    Advice to Management

Wish good Spectra culture can be adopted by the Enbridge management. In the end, people shall the key to the company’s future. Employees’ loyalty and trust are essential and that shall never be overlooked by the new management.

I have been working at Spectra Energy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Great people
    - Most employees have been around 30+ years, since Westcoast Energy
    - Very satisfying work, diverse projects
    - Fantastic compensation, benefits and pension
    - Company really encourages internal hiring, making it easy to move around or up
    - Great work life balance, all overtime is compensated and not too much overtime unless your department is not well managed

    Cons

    - Company has changed too much. From Westcoast to Duke, to Spectra, now to Enbridge
    - Hiring poor management who cannot deliver and makes their staff miserable
    - Not a lot of desirable working locations in western Canada
    - Company runs very bare bones in all departments, causing people to be unable to do their jobs

    Advice to Management

    - Stop hiring so many contractors
    - Need to hire and attract more effective managers rather than settling for ones that struggle in their role and cannot lead a team
