I have been working at Spectra Energy full-time

    Pros

Upper management wants to improve project management.

    Cons

Project controls Dept rules with an iron fist creating and enacting an arduous process in a vacuum without regard to the team members that will have to use it.

There is no concern for managing relationships of team members.

I have been working at Spectra Energy (Less than a year)

    Pros

Spectra Energy really values its employees. The work life balance at the company makes working for them truly pleasant.

    Cons

I think that my only negative comment regarding Spectra Energy is that there is a great deal of red tape.

    Advice to Management

I would advise management to move quicker and place more value on performance. I feel that there is too much value placed on seniority.

    Cons

middle management is ignored when they are not qualified
employees approaching 50 are not considered useful
hiring of minorities is good, but often takes precedence over qualifications
employees that are not producing or even working are allowed to stay

    Advice to Management

please pay attention to groups that have the same complaint or issues and come forward

I have been working at Spectra Energy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

9/80 schedule, full benefits, 3 Wks vacation starting, full reimbursement for school tuition (if manager approves)

    Cons

low salaries, management does not listen to employee complaints, poor work moral (some groups not all) no clear way to measure employee success, promotions and raises are handed to "teacher pets", limited advancement opportunities- managers are no help, company is cheap no Christmas Party, NYs etc., internal movement to other departments WILL NOT HAPPEN regardless of experience or education

    Advice to Management

stop being cheap pay your employees a fair wage, establish a system to measure success & reevaluate/replace middle management

I have been working at Spectra Energy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Positive corporate culture. Wellness and charity are encouraged and rewarded. People are very nice. For most positions, a 9/80 schedule or 1 day/week remote is allowed. Onsite cafeteria and gym.

    Cons

Spectra hires good people, but not necessarily good talent. Under-performers who should be put on performance improvement plans or let go are instead tolerated and not dealt with effectively, which drags down the whole team.

Performance reviews are somewhat BS. The scale is 1 to 5, but you're not allowed to rate yourself a 5, because "if you were that good, you should be promoted." (Well, maybe I should!)

    Advice to Management

Crack down on under-performing employees who are wasting the company's money and everyone else's time. Attract and retain better talent. Improve the performance review process by not making the best rating off-limits--some people really are that good and should be acknowledged and rewarded.

I have been working at Spectra Energy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    1. 9/80 schedule.
    2. 3 weeks vacation right off the bat.

    Cons

    1. They pay dramatically less then market value. I have friends in both engineering and accounting that get paid 30-40K less then market value, and I myself get paid 20-24K less then market value.

    2. There is no way to measure success here, those who join the LDN and make friends with high ups get promoted, others who don't and work hard, stay in the same position without raises forever.

    3. Even when there is a horrible manager in a group, upper management refuses to move them, they just send said manager to all kinds of "sensitivity training" that does nothing to improve anyone's situation.

    4. They say Spectra is the 7th best place to work in Houston, TX. If this is true, I am truly appalled at how terrible it is to work in Houston.

    Advice to Management

Pay people what they are worth.

    Pros

The company has very good benefits and a flexible a schedule. It is a very stable company and it offers the opportunity to be employed and to get a paycheck.

    Cons

PSCM is new and it has no direction. There are no real opportunities for advancement. Most people in PSCM talks about leaving the company as soon as an opportunity arrives.

    Pros

Stable, Mid-Size Company with good compensation benefits

    Cons

High Turn Over Rate, No Room For Growth, Departmental Silos

    Advice to Management

Take more value in the development and success of your direct reports. Give them a chance to grow instead of demand perfection. Give new employees no matter the onboarding type a detailed orientation to the company, position, team, and expectations.
