I have been working at Spectra Energy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people are extremely nice--respectful and professional. The company respects each employee's time and life outside the office. Perks include annual bonus (based on company performance), cafeteria, and gym in building.

    Cons

The team on which I work is not extremely well-organized (but is getting better); consequently decisions are often made by individuals without regard for the impacts to others. From what I understand, other teams are more structured.

I have been working at Spectra Energy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Spectra Energy has a great working environment and everybody is very friendly.I very much enjoy working there. It's the best time to be in this industry and Spectra Energy is very competitive.

    Cons

Things sometimes can go a little slow in terms of change but the corporation is currently working on that. Compensation may be a little less than competition.

    Pros

Great environment, given your own cubicle and laptop, work with other interns in a very similar position as yourself. Get to work on multiple projects and at the end you present it to the top management and VP of Supply Chain

    Cons

Sometimes it can be slow, not always a lot to do, it was their first time doing an internship with Supply Chain majors so you have to bare with them for they are learning at the same time as you.

This company has a well organized structure. Company is well positioned in the energy market and has an innovative culture. Employees enjoy their jobs and and involvement with the community. Company provides a competitive salary and benefit package. Great mix of young and experienced talent.

    Cons

Everyone seems to like and enjoys their work, so upward mobility or even job changes opportunities are slow to materialize.

    Advice to Management

Include training opportunities for career advancement, like six sigma and or other professional certifications.

    Pros

Truly cares about employees. Excellent executive leadership.

    Cons

Bias toward hiring leaders from outside rather than promote from within.

    Advice to Management

Make a concerted effort to promote from within. There is plenty of great talent, recognize and promote it!

    Pros

People are usually willing to help you. There are always networking events going on! They take care of their employees and look out for their well-being.

    Cons

There are some older people who are difficult to read; they might feel threatened when they see young professionals in their department.

    Advice to Management

Encourage seasoned employees to mingle with the younger employees!

I have been working at Spectra Energy full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Positive corporate culture. Wellness and charity are encouraged and rewarded. People are very nice. For most positions, a 9/80 schedule or 1 day/week remote is allowed. Onsite cafeteria and gym.

    Cons

Spectra hires good people, but not necessarily good talent. Under-performers who should be put on performance improvement plans or let go are instead tolerated and not dealt with effectively, which drags down the whole team.

Performance reviews are somewhat BS. The scale is 1 to 5, but you're not allowed to rate yourself a 5, because "if you were that good, you should be promoted." (Well, maybe I should!)

    Advice to Management

Crack down on under-performing employees who are wasting the company's money and everyone else's time. Attract and retain better talent. Improve the performance review process by not making the best rating off-limits--some people really are that good and should be acknowledged and rewarded.
