I have been working at Spectrum Brands full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

-Trusts employees to make decisions and get the job done
    -Active, energetic, vibrant environment
-“Can do” corporate culture, not a place for pessimists
-Great product lines and brands that are fun to work on
-Really good corporate discounts on company-made products, gym and cafeteria at headquarters, nice facilities and office
-Upper management seems committed to making Spectrum a good place to work
-People who work there are great to work with and knowledgeable
-Usually a good work/life balance, and the company will reward those who overwork themselves when needed

    Cons

!!!-Communication & Departmentalization Problems: Employees don’t know who-does-what, or who to go to for certain types of information, employees come and go and other employees who relied upon the departing individual aren’t informed, and when new employees are hired they aren’t trained or told who they need to provide information to and when (this is also a process documentation problem) and this leads to some people doing their job without helpful or needed information, and a bunch of departments all working away on their own projects, sometimes duplicating efforts, and not communicating or knowing what others are doing. This is Spectrum Brands most frustrating problem, and the only real complaint I have.

    Advice to Management

-Management seems to want to let employees work out the communication problems with tools to share processes, etc. but solving this issue is going to take some initiative and involvement from the top. Someone needs to take the time to understand what every department does, and what other department rely upon them for information or assistance to get their jobs done; then basic, flexible, undetailed processes need to be documented to ensure everyone understands what is needed, and so things don’t slip through the cracks or get forgotten about when someone leaves. There also needs to be a better tool created so employees know who to go to when they need something specific.

I worked at Spectrum Brands full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

good teams, company sponsored benefits/events, fellow colleagues, opportunities

    Cons

some management is well to work with, some managers of department do not communicate well with team

    Advice to Management

Upper management needs to get more involved and discuss with related employees of various departments under their purview various activities that go on within the department. More importantly, change the way various department are working so that all employees are aware of company's objectives and plans. Upper management needs to be more responsive to employees comments (good or bad) as to how they are faring within the department. Get rid of managers/employees who cause discord or causes problems to the degree that departments are not able to function.

I have been working at Spectrum Brands full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Rayovac, a union shop and a subsidiary of Spectrum Brands, is a great workplace if you like overtime. Nearly guaranteed 40 hour work weeks, alot of the time 1 mandated overtime day but can volunteer for 2 overtime days each week. This coupled with great factory pay, makes a nice weekly check.

8 hour days, 30 minutes of breaks consisting of one ten minute break and one twenty minute break.

Weekends usually entail free coffee, donuts, and sometimes pizza among other snacks.

Most of the management (all are non union) are usually easy to work with and can be considered a teammate rather than a boss.

Full benefits- health, eye, and dental insurance; Retirement plan, and paid vacation time.

Being a union shop, coworkers are friendly and helpful as long as you do your part. Most of the time you work as a team and if one person doesn't do their part, it is harder on everyone else. It benefits everyone to teach each other how to complete tasks at hand. If one day your having a bad day, they help out when needed. This is very helpful but remember to not bite the hand that feeds.

    Cons

Chances of having reoccurring two days off a week is nearly unheard of except in select departments, or during the very short slow periods. But even in the few weeks of being slow, 40 hours weeks are always there.

Paid vacation time is a bidding process but if you don't have a few years under your belt, it has to be taken all at once.

There is no sick time, in place of sick days there is a point system. If you have alot of appointments or days you cant work, it has to be scheduled around your work hours or work a shift that works with your personal life.

    Advice to Management

Listen to all employees, not just your select few.
