    Pros

Interesting work and great people at my plant site. Opportunity to be involved in the business. Hopefully better Parent Company relationship after Chapter 11.

    Cons

Arrogant Parent Company management that did not value years of expertise that many employees brought to the business. Struggling financial situation.

Overall Great, but work on Departmentalization

Nov 9, 2017 - Manager in Gurgaon, Haryana
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

-Trusts employees to make decisions and get the job done -Active, energetic, vibrant environment -“Can do” corporate culture, not a place for pessimists -Great product lines and brands that are fun to work on -Really good corporate discounts on company-made products, gym and cafeteria at headquarters, nice facilities and office -Upper management seems committed to making Spectrum a good place to work -People who work there are great to work with and knowledgeable -Usually a good work/life balance, and the company will reward those who overwork themselves when needed

    Cons

!!!-Communication & Departmentalization Problems: Employees don’t know who-does-what, or who to go to for certain types of information, employees come and go and other employees who relied upon the departing individual aren’t informed, and when new employees are hired they aren’t trained or told who they need to provide information to and when (this is also a process documentation problem) and this leads to some people doing their job without helpful or needed information, and a bunch of departments all working away on their own projects, sometimes duplicating efforts, and not communicating or knowing what others are doing. This is Spectrum Brands most frustrating problem, and the only real complaint I have.

Mediocre even though they don't have to be (HHI Division)

Apr 27, 2017 - Middle Management in Noida
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - Upbeat on the surface - Reasonably laid back culture with no micromanaging and frequent learning opportunities - Moderate tolerance for creative contribution and job ownership/growth - Great people by and large - hard working, friendly, positive. Kwikset and especially Kevo are amazing and pretty much carry the entire company on their shoulders (despite the pressures outlined below).

    Cons

-Vision vacuum spurs fear-based leadership. After president/CEO left, management by popularity contest and "don't ruffle feathers" decision making kicked in. Fear of committing to a solid course of action has kept greatness at bay and locked in mediocrity. - Self preservation "trumps" all. Belief among top leaders that power comes from each other and not happy customers/investors sucks up too much time and effort. Energy spent on internal politics and staving off threats to power could push the company to new heights if channeled in the right direction. Sadly, incentive structure is not aligned with long term success. - Self-preservation except when that "self" isn't you. Sense of responsibility for employee well-being is lacking:. Foreign workers are routinely denied resources needed to perform their jobs yet are held to the same standard as domestic workers. Same thing with perks and benefits. [ethnocentrism + myopic focus on bonus -- vision = passive aggressive employee relations] Examples: 1. HR management practices that are behind the times and even behind conservative peer companies, 2. Brilliant, talented, highly-experienced engineers are forced to sit in Stanley national hardware designing $2 generic door stoppers, 3. Hold a market position of 3rd in almost every category but doesn't drive discontent, 4. HR/Senior team didn't call to check on a company-owned location with 600 employees located in the epicenter of a massive earthquake (Taiwan) or communicate their well-being to the broader company, 5.No senior visits to the Philippines although 1/3 of the entire company is based there and employee injuries occurred on a weekly basis, many serious - amputations, collisions with powered industrial trucks, 6. etc.

No work - life balance. Toxic Environment

    Sep 11, 2019 - Account Manager
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Ability to work without being micro managed. Great people to work with and among. Strong people who have been able to keep this ship afloat. Good products.

    Cons

Work life balance did not exist outside of the corporate offices. Management is promoted from within and are all friends, it is not by merit. Some have been promoted either before the interview or without an interview. It has become a very toxic environment over the past 3 years. There has been NO innovation in the Pet, Home & Garden side over the past few years.

Good company to work for, bottle neck for promotion.

Oct 7, 2014 - Market Sales Coordinator in Bangalore
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

If you perform as is expected you get left alone to do your job. In the lawn and garden division of the company you are expected to work on weekends because of the seasonality of the business. Lots of down time in the colder months although they keep you busy in other large retail (big box) accounts taking care of other products that the company carries such as Rayovac products and Remington products.

    Cons

If you are wanting to move up the promotion ladder in Field sales you will have a very long wait! There is a narrow bottle neck for promotion as many employees (although very loyal and great people) have been there for years. If your personality and face fits here you can do well. Way too much tracking! Tended to spend more time explaining on tablet what you had accomplished than actually doing it.

For ten years, Spectrum Brands has partnered with Well Aware Nonprofit to bring awareness to water insecurity in Africa. Since the partnership began in 2012, Spectrum Brands has helped fund more than 12 Well Aware projects and enabled more than 45,000 individuals in East Africa to gain clean water. Water insecurity affects millions of people, and disproportionately impacts women and children who are often responsible for collecting water for the family and community. As we celebrate #WorldWaterDay, you can help raise much needed funding for future water projects by participating in #ShowerStrike! Learn more at showerstrike.org.
