I have been working at Spectrum Health full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

My experience of the front-line RN's and Nurse Techs has been awesome. Despite Spectrum's many faults, I would always trust the care I'm getting. The company might not give a rip about the actual patients, and see you as a dollar sign, but the staff actually do care.

    Cons

Poorly Staffed. RN's aren't paid well, and once you're in the raises don't keep up with cost of living. They gave all of the inpt RN's a pay raise a couple years ago because the "magnet status" people told corporate that they don't pay the RNs enough, but this raise didn't apply to anyone outside of the hospital group because magnet status is only for hospitals, so why pay the non-hospital staff more...? So basically RN's who worked at the hospital for years & left because they were sick of being underpaid didn't get the raise they deserve. Any job you apply to that should be a "raise" within spectrum bases that raise on your current rate, not on what the job should pay. Basically for me, any job moving up the ladder would only give me a $1.30 raise- more of a slap in the face than anything. Anyone looking to advance their career should do so elsewhere, then maybe come back to spectrum & they'll start you in at a higher rate based on that... otherwise they try to bleed you dry & spread you thin internally. You're a dime a dozen, if you won't take the job for little pay, they will find someone to do it for that low amount. Working here is basically a dead-end job. They care more about how things are "perceived" by the patient that they do about the actual quality of the care that gets delivered. If you gave corporate the option of "doing the right thing for the patient vs doing something that makes the patient THINK they are getting the right thing"... they would totally go for the latter. Especially if it saves money. They prey on the fact that a lot of nurses are caring types who martyr themselves and do a lot of "cool" "Intense" jobs for actual passion for their jobs or for bragging rights- but they don't compensate for the hard work RN's do

Some individual managers are good, some are a joke. Depends on the individuals. The manager evals go from the top down, not at all from the bottom up. There's no way to give feedback on your manager's performance... which shows that they only care about "the numbers" and how things are going on paper. Meanwhile, the staff on the front line can actually identify a lot of waste and inefficiency in their manager but have no way to voice it without giving themselves away & putting themselves at risk for retaliation.

    Advice to Management

Every manager should get some sort of evaluative information that comes from their subordinates. This should be reported to the manager's boss (director) so all of their shady crap stops going unnoticed. Pay your nurses a respectable amount for Heaven's sake. What a joke

I have been working at Spectrum Health full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedule for now. Good benefits

    Cons

Pay, they seem to care more about recognitions and awards that actual staff happiness. They "trial" things before making the change to see what staff think but in reality they are gonna make the change whether staff like it or not. Patient ratio. Everything is about the budget but they are always remodeling and buying out smaller hospitals.

    Advice to Management

Patient safety should come first rather than worrying about the budget. Actually listen to your employees and care about them.

I have been working at Spectrum Health full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Job security and many employment opportunities available working for such a large entity.

    Cons

Too focused on awards and recognition, not enough focus on patients. Do not promote from within. Pay is average, but CEO makes 5 million/year at a non-profit??

    Advice to Management

Promote from within and spend time with employees who actually contact patients before making decisions related to patient care when you have not been in patient care in over 20 years.

I worked at Spectrum Health full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Most functional is teams are great, many different projects available to work on. Flexible work hours. Some great people really do work here. Health benefits although expensive are really good.

    Cons

The EPMO is very disorganized and dysfunctional. They claim that there is one PMO across the organization.... This is not true the more guided and stood up PMO is on the health plan side... They seem to follow process and guidelines. Projects are well vetted before they are assigned to a project manager. The delivery side has another PMO that does not follow process. The project managers that are assigned projects there have a whole separate process to learn for that side. Management is oblivious to this and thinks there is one process when there is not. Up lines and regular level staff are leaving in droves and moving either outside the department or the organization. 12 year employees are even leaving. Most of the great intellectual talent is leaving and what is left is leadership that was there by default when spectrum was formed.

    Advice to Management

New PMO leadership at the top is needed... Better communication in the PMO is needed, the turf war and politics between the insurance PMO and delivery PMO needs to stop. We need one process to follow for project with documentation that is followed by the entire organization and not picked and chosen on the delivery side to follow or not to follow.

    Pros

great pay, friendly management, alot opportunity for overtime

    Cons

management has no leadership skills, disorganized (i felt everytime i signed my name i was risking my license), Doesnt help people with addiction problems because this place is so disorganized that they get a different answer from each staff, Coworkers who are trying to get you fire, none of the other nurses ever worked detox and had almost no training what so ever, when i put in my notice management tried to not pay me my last paycheck on top of the multiple other times the paycheck was off or late, always left AT LEAST an hour after shift was done

I worked at Spectrum Health full-time

    Pros

Pay was commensurate for the skill level I have. The benefits were good, although the amount we had to contribute kept going up to Priority Health.

    Cons

The management level people are in their own nebulous world. They are out of touch with the day to day functions of the operation. Most don't even know how to turn a wrench. Human resources exist for themselves. Both are so protected with layers of cushion (people) that you cannot talk to anyone that would truly represent you.

    Advice to Management

Get a real job, get out of your "lofty" positions and see what is really going on. Management no longer cares about patient satisfaction. They just care about turning rooms over the faster, the better. They claim to have green environments. Right, the paint they use has such high VOC that all the buildings including the cancer buildings are painted with the toxic crap. They will always deny such things because of their " pristine" image. Bottom line = MONEY. Corporate greed

    Pros

    Amazing hospitals and community reputation.

    Cons

Too political. You have to be best friends with a VP to ever get a promotion. Don't plan on moving up unless you want to suck up to a lot of people.

    Advice to Management

Realize the talent you have - or they will go somewhere that values them.
