I have been working at Spectrum Health full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    People are nice enough
    Get a few discounts

    Cons

You will always be short staffed never have what you need In house they only offer 1 raise per year and it is only about 30 cents no matter how good your review is. Half the equipment is busted and they claim no money for it but then open up 4 new locations then pull from our already short staff forcing people into mandatory overtime

    Advice to Management

Start paying marker rate and stop being so condescending too your workers most of us know how to do our jobs and apparently know it better then you with you not knowing how to cook or clean something or knowing the diets

I have been working at Spectrum Health full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good co-workers, relatively low pressure, flexible work schedule

    Cons

heavy bureaucracy, cumbersome processes, below average compensation and opportunity for advancement

    Advice to Management

pay more attention to input from first tier personnel in all departments and clear obstacles out of their way so they can do real work.

Spectrum has the goal of becoming a nationally competitive healthcare provider but it will never meet that goal until it is willing to do the necessary work to become a nationally competitive employer.

I worked at Spectrum Health as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

    Great pay. Friendly coworkers.

    Cons

Terrible communication. I was guaranteed a position when I graduated but when I moved departments my position was discontinued halfway through the summer with no warning.

    Advice to Management

Be honest with interns. Don't promise a job and not follow through.

I worked at Spectrum Health (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Compensation is fair if negotiated but also subject to individual management bias.

    Cons

Culture is more of fear and intimidation rather than people focused. Often the mission of the business contradicts treatment of staff.

    Advice to Management

Lead by example. Share more of the wealth with front line staff.

I worked at Spectrum Health (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Vast majority of employees are committed to trying to provide excellent patient care and other services.

    Cons

Lack of leadership support for employees.
Opportunities for new positions or professional growth are very limited or nonexistent for employees with higher education and experience.

    Advice to Management

Invest in all of your employees through presence, timely and consistent feedback, and encouragement. The work itself is challenging and rewarding; do not add to its stress by creating or allowing a toxic culture.

    Pros

Great pay, benefits, and flexibly. Has a great vision and mission statement. Usually good staff to work with.

    Cons

Not much for advancement. A lot of departmental silo views and hard to break ground with projects. Too big of a company to care about individual employees.

    Advice to Management

Stop looking outside of the company to hire management talent.

I have been working at Spectrum Health full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Fantastic hospital to learn at, you are only limited by your effort. Protocols make your day much easier and function more as a med professional. You will be allowed to function as a leader if you know your stuff. Good job security.

    Cons

No sick days, you have to use vacation time.

No maternity leave, you go on disability and may get 6 to 12 weeks.

Health benefits are slightly better than average (spectrum health is also priority Heath. I think it's insane we pay as much as we do for healthcare)

work/life benefits and perks have been slowly eroded away over the years.

Rewards for being a high performer are minimal, so you have lots of good people who just doing the bear minimum.

Pay has not kept pace with inflation or cost of living (pay scale hasn't changed in 25yrs). Nursing will get pay raises, respiratory won't.

If you leave, you will never get hired back. Huge turnover lately but not historically.

The few positions available that aren't clinical (there's about 6) typically go to friends of the department head (all women in their 40's to 60's).

    Advice to Management

Adjust pay to keep pace with nursing. Your salaries are only competitive with GR hospitals, not the nation as a whole. If you want to be a nationally recognized healthcare system, that has to be addressed.

Your a hospital, give the women starting families maternity leave. And sick days! I wonder how much disease/flu's are transmitted to pts and employees bc sick people are coming into work.

Reward high performers with pay increases.

    Cons

    Low pay
    Hard to advance
    Inconsistent leaders
    Poor insurance options

    Advice to Management

Higher pay is needed to retain good talent.
